[Dynamics of mental disorders after extracerebral implantation of embryonal nervous tissue in epilepsy].

The paper presents the method elaborated by the authors for production, storage and implantation of embryonal nervous tissue (ENT). Extracerebral implantation was performed in 33 epileptic patients aged 2-58 years. Clinical state of the patients and EEG alterations were studied. Before treatment the patients' mental status was characterized by affective disorders, dysphoria, depression, exhaustion of mental processes, varying intellectual-mnestic decrease and behavioral disinhibition. Oligophrenia as of debility was observed in several cases. After implantation the pronounced positive changes in both paroxysmal states and overall mental status were observed in all the cases irrespective of their age of the patients. These clinical changes correlated with the dynamics of EEG changes (EEG changes were not observed in 2 individuals with positive clinical effects).

[Therapy of primary brain tumors with segidrin].

The results of segidrin administration to 46 patients with malignant and 6 patients with benign tumors of the brain are presented. Pronounced therapeutic effect for the whole group was 63.5% and 73%, if partial regression of neurologic symptoms in the entire brain and separate foci is considered. These indexes for patients with malignant tumors only were 61 and 71.7%, respectively. Since segidrin has virtually no significant untoward side-effects, it is considered a most safe medicine for managing brain tumors. It is recommended in cases of inoperable tumor and for post-operative adjuvant chemotherapy with a view to extending the patient's survival time and improving the quality of life.

[Cerebrospinal fluid therapy in patients with central motor disorders].

The authors relate new concepts of the mechanisms of the pathogenesis and compensation of central motor disorders of organic origin, based on experimental exploits of the I.P. Pavlov Physiological Department of the Institute of Experimental Medicine. It is shown that in these mechanisms, of paramount importance is the neurochemical component determining a considerable part of the symptomatology of neurological disorders and process of disturbed functions recovery. Based on the regularities discovered and studies of the properties of the convalescents" CSF, a method of its use has been developed in order to treat residual phenomena after brain stroke or craniocerebral injury. The authors describe the results of the clinical testing of that method, demonstrating its effectiveness in the treatment of chronic neurological patients.

[Transplantation of embryonal nerve tissues in the treatment of Parkinson disease].

The authors describe the results of experimental studies of transplants of embryonal nervous tissues of man in the brain of adult animals. Base the use of transplantation of the embryonal dopaminergic structures for the treatment of patients suffering from parkinsonism. Provide the first results of the treatment of 2 patients suffering from parkinsonism by means of transplanting parts of the medium cerebral vesicle of human embryos. The observation period amounts to 6 months.

Psychophysiological micromapping of the human brain.

Neuronal impulse activity (NIA) of cortex and subcortical nuclei of the brain was studied in patients diagnosed and treated with the aid of long-term intracerebral electrodes. A special battery of psychophysiological tests was constructed for study of reflexion of different mental functions in NIA, such as various speech functions, short-term and long-term memory, count and arithmetic operations, emotions. Neuronal populations with the significant responses have been revealed during these testings. First results of psychophysiological mapping of the human brain obtained from NIA data have been presented.

[Pathogenesis of phantom limb syndrome and its treatment].

The spinal mechanism of the phantom pain origin is proved. The underlying factors are: segmentary spinal denervation hypersensitivity and attenuation of the descending inhibitory influence. The pathogenetic treatment of phantom pains is proposed by means of an associated treatment by GABA-ergic drug--Baclofen and alpha-2--adrenomimetic--Clofelin. Good effects of the proposed scheme of treatment confirm the correctness of the presented ideas of pathogenesis of phantom pains.

[Use of transcranial electroanalgesia for treating spondylogenic pain syndromes].

The analgesic effect of the net transcutaneous application to the brain of constant and impulse currents (the frequency of rectangular impulses was 77 Hz, the duration of an impulse, 3.5 ms) in a 2-5:1 ratio was investigated. An analgesic effect was observed in both healthy subjects and in patients with spondylogenic pain. The duration of analgesic effect following a 30-minute therapeutic session was 6-10 hours. A 5-7 session course was associated with a gradual increase and stabilization of the analgesic effect. The procedure was attended by no complications.

[Neurochemical aspects of therapeutic electric stimulation].

Comparative analysis of the CSF and blood protein-peptide composition in Parkinsonian patients performed with the aid of indwelled electrodes prior to and after therapeutic electrical stimulation (TES) of the brain subcortical structures, revealed a therapeutic effect in the form of reduced muscular rigidity and a mental activation with a positive emotional response. After the TES the protein content in the biological fluids tended to become normalized and the the range of low-molecular protein-peptide fractions changed. A high-performance liquid chromatography, bidimensional electrophoresis and thin-layer chromatography revealed about 5-6 factors of peptide nature with the molecular mass less than 5000 daltons in the CSF and blood after the TES. These factors were shown to exert a biological effect upon muscle preparation of the leech.

[New criteria for positron emission tomographic diagnosis of brain glioma using 11C-methionine].

The study was based on the data of positron emission tomography (PET) and L-[methyl]-[11C]-methionine used in 117 patients with suspected brain tumor. PET data on 74 patients with histologically verified cerebral tumors were analyzed in detail. New additional criteria for assessing PET scans, which formed the PET syndromes of astrocytomas, anaplastic astrocytomas, and glioblastomas. Operative and histological verification confirmed the high validity of the proposed criteria for defining the type of a tumor.
