Targeting cancer control: the state cancer control map and data program.

The State Cancer Control Map and Data Program (National Technical Information Service, Springfield, Va) allows state and county mortality maps and data tables to be tailored according to the user's choice of cancer site, age, gender, race, county, and time period between 1953 and 1987. Counties and subpopulations within these maps and data tables that are identified as having exceptionally high rates of specific cancers can then be targeted for early detection or primary prevention. These maps and data tables provide a means for focusing state, local, and individual efforts to reduce cancer mortality in appropriate populations in areas with high mortality rates.

Improving and maintaining preventive services. Part 1: Applying the patient path model.

Research in the past two decades has made remarkable progress in determining the variables that affect preventive care within primary care practices. The level of preventive care that a patient receives is largely determined by factors within the medical office setting. Many of these factors can be modified by physicians to encourage preventive care. An overview of these factors, presented as the Patient Path Model, can provide a framework for systematic practice evaluation. This model can be applied to almost any office setting to help identify opportunities to enhance and improve preventive care.

Improving and maintaining preventive services, Part 2: Practical principles for primary care.

Recent research has recognized several themes that have been common to many successful projects for increasing cancer screening and other prevention activities. The most common of these themes have been condensed into "principles for implementation," intended to help physicians and other health care providers to improve the provision of preventive medical care within their practices.

Physician compliance: improving skills in preventive medicine practices.

Physicians may not comply with all of the preventive medicine recommendations issued by recognized medical consensus groups. Compliance with recommendations for mammography, Papanicolaou tests and smoking cessation counseling is particularly important because of the potential to save lives. Compliance failure rates are often underestimated, in part because of misconceptions about the nature of physician compliance. An understanding of the difficulty in accurately estimating compliance and an awareness of the factors that affect compliance are fundamental to improving the delivery of preventive services.
