Photoelectrocatalytic degradation of humic acid in aqueous solution using a Ti/TiO2 mesh photoelectrode.

Humic acid (HA) is one of natural organics existing in water supply as a precursor of trihalomethanes formation in chlorination. The photo-degradation of HA in aqueous solution by photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation using a Ti/TiO2 mesh electrode was investigated in terms of UV absorbance at 254 nm, colour and TOC concentration. The key factors affecting the PEC oxidation efficiency were studied, including the concentration of electrolyte, electrical bias applied. pH value of HA solution, the intensity of incident light and the area of Ti/TiO2 mesh photoelectrodes. The first-order kinetic model was applied to describe the PEC oxidation, in which the kinetic constant k was verified by the experimental data as a function of the concentration of electrolyte, light intensity, the area of Ti/TiO2 mesh electrode and the voltage of electrical bias applied. It was found that there was an optimal bias voltage of 1.63 V and low pH value was favourable for TOC removal in HA solution. Our investigation showed that PEC oxidation was a convenient way to mineralise the organic matters with high efficiency.

The enhancement of photodegradation efficiency using Pt-TiO2 catalyst.

This study investigates the mechanism of photosensitization and the recombination of excited electron-hole pairs affected by depositing platinum (Pt) on the surface of titanium dioxide (TiO2). A new catalyst of Pt-TiO2 was prepared by a photoreduction process. Being model reactions, the photocatalytic oxidation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solutions using the Pt-TiO2 catalyst was carried out under either UV or visible light irradiation. The experimental results indicate that an optimal content of 0.75%Pt-TiO2 achieves the best photocatalytic performance of MB and MO degradation and that the Pt-TiO2 catalyst can be sensitized by visible light. The interaction of Pt and TiO2 was investigated by means of UV-Vis absorption spectra, photoluminescence emission spectra, and X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy. The Pt0, Pt2+ and Pt4+ species existing on the surface of Pt-TiO2, and the Ti3+ species existing in its lattice may form a defect energy level. The Pt impurities, including Pt, Pt(OH)2, and PtO2, and the defect energy level absorb visible light more efficiently in comparison with the pure TiO2 and hinder the recombination rate of excited electron-hole pairs.

Photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution using Ti/TiO2 mesh photoelectrodes.

To further improve the photooxidation techniques for water and waste-water purification, a Ti/TiO2 mesh electrode, was successfully prepared by anodizing Ti mesh in 0.5M H2SO4 solution. The structural and surface morphology of the Ti/TiO2 electrode was examined by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) respectively. The examination results indicated that its structure and properties were affected by its growth rate in the anodization process, and anatase TiO2 was dominant in its composition. The photocatalytic (PC) oxidation and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation of rhodamine B in aqueous solution using the Ti/TiO2 electrode were investigated and compared. The experimental results demonstrated that the PEC oxidation by applying an electrical bias between the Ti/TiO2 electrode and Pt electrode could significantly enhance the degradation rate of rhodamine B compared with the PC oxidation. It was found that the best performance of PEC oxidation was achieved by applying the electrical bias of 0.6 V. The mechanism of rhodamine B degradation in the PEC process was discussed by studying the changes of absorbance spectrum and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of rhodamine B during the PEC degradation. The experimental results illustrated that both de-ethylation and chromogen destruction of rhodamine B under UV-light irradiation in the PEC degradation took place simultaneously.

Study of Au/Au(3+)-TiO2 photocatalysts toward visible photooxidation for water and wastewater treatment.

With an attempt to extend light absorption of TiO2-based photocatalyst toward the visible light range and eliminate the rapid recombination of excited electrons/holes during photoreaction, a new type of photocatalysts (Au/Au(3+)-TiO2) powder was prepared by a photoreduction/sol-gel process. The crystal phase composition, surface structure, and light absorption of the new photocatalysts were comprehensively examined by X-ray differential detection (XRD), UV-visible absorption spectra, X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photooxidation efficiencies of the photocatalysts were also evaluated in the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solutions under visible light irradiation from a high-pressure sodium lamp (lambda > 400 nm). The results of PL analyses in this study indicated that the gold/gold ion-doping on the surface of TiO2 could eliminate the electron/holes recombination and also increase the light absorption in the visible range. The analytical results of UV-visible diffuse reflection spectra (DRS) and optical absorption spectra indicated that a new energy level below 3.2 eV generated in the Au/Au(3+)-TiO2 promoted the optical absorption in the visible region and made it possible to be excited by visible light (E < 3.2 eV). The experiment demonstrated that the photooxidation efficiency of MB using the Au/Au(3+)-TiO2 powder were significantly higher than that using conventional TiO2 powder and an optimum molar content of gold doping/deposition in the TiO2 was 0.5%. The development of such photocatalysts may be considered a breakthrough in large-scale utilization of solar energy to address environmental needs.

TiO2-assisted photo-catalysis degradation process of dye chemicals.

The photo-catalytic degradation pathway and degradation products of methylene blue, rhodamine B, methyl orange, and malachite green in aqueous TiO2 suspension irradiated by high pressure mercury lamp by means of UV-visible absorption spectra and ion chromatography were investigated. The photo-catalysis degradation of dye solutions with charges was greatly effected by pH value owing to the electrostatic model. The photo-degradation rate of dyes anion increased with the decrease of pH value, in contrast, the photo-degradation rate of dyes cation increased with the increase of pH value. And the absorption peaks diminished with a blue shift. After illuminated for 30 minutes, a part of dye chemicals were completely mineralized and transferred into inorganic species including chloride ion, ammonium ion, nitrate ion, sulfate ion. And the addition of 100 mmol/L H2O2 promoted the formation of inorganic species. In this study, the quantity of ammonium ion was much more than that of nitrate ion. That indicated the formation of nitrate is from ammonium. The purification rate of COD in four kinds of dye solution was 71.7%-88.7%. The decrease of COD of dyes solution implies the feasibility of the environmental application of photo-catalyzed process.

Enhanced photo--catalytic activity of gold ion and gold modified.

The gold ion modified TiO2 was prepared by means of sol-gel whereas gold deposited TiO2 was prepared by means of photo-reduction. The physical properties were influenced significantly by the presence of gold ion or gold. The enhanced photo-activity of gold modified TiO2 was quantified in terms of methylene blue degradation. The presence of gold ion in TiO2 lattices or gold on TiO2 surface enhanced their photo-activity. The optimum molar content of gold ion doping and gold deposition all was 0.5%. The first-order rates constants of gold modified TiO2 was more than that of pure TiO2, and decreased by increasing the content of gold ion and gold when their contents were more than 0.5%. Gold ion doped in TiO2 lattices was more effective to enhance the photo-activity than gold on TiO2 surface. Moreover, the relationship between physical properties, chemical properties and photo-activity has been discussed.

Nitrogen transformations during pig manure composting.

Composting is now suggested as one of the environmentally and friendly alternative method for disposal of solid organic wastes, as it leads to minimization, stabilization, and utilization of organic waste. Transformations of nitrogen were investigated in co-composting of pig manure with different amendments, such as sawdust and leaves. Samples were analyzed for pH, total-N, soluble NH4-N, soluble NO3-N and soluble organic-N. The total-N increased after 63 days of composting, as well as the soluble NO3-N and soluble organic-N. Soluble NH4-N increased significantly and showed peak values at day 7, thereafter decreased sharply and gradually to lower levels. Seed germination index (GI) showed that co-composting of pig manure with sawdust reached maturity after 49 days of composting, while co-composting of pig manure with sawdust and leaves required shorter time for 35 days. Soluble NH4-N was significantly negatively (P < 0.05), while soluble NO3-N and soluble organic-N were significantly positively (P < 0.05), correlated with seed germination index (GI). Addition of leaves in co-composting of pig manure with sawdust had no significant impacts on nitrogen transformations, but it was beneficial for maturity of pig manure compost.

Expression of nm23 protein in human osteosarcoma in relationship with early metastasis.

Nm23 protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemical staining using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections from 39 cases with osteosarcomas and compared with the histologic findings and early metastasis for the purpose of detecting nm23 expression in osteosarcoma and elucidating the clinical significance of its expression. Immunoreactivity of nm23 protein was detected in 48.7% of the total cases. There was no statistical difference between nm23 expression and early metastasis, but there was a trend for cases with nm23 expression to progress to early metastasis within 1 year after operation. The role of nm23 as a tumor metastasis suppressor in osteosarcomas appeared less prominent.

[Study of the bone formation and osteogenesis after transplantation of human periosteal mesenchymal stem cells].

OBJECTIVE: To study the bone formation and osteogenesis after transplantation of human periosteal mesenchymal stem cells(PMSC). METHODS: Suspension of PMSC which obtained from cell culture of periosteal segments in vitro were injected into the backs of nude mice subcutaneously, and the fracture site of neck of femur in old person. RESULTS: Subdermal nodules were observed by naked eyes after 11 days of transplantation. 4 weeks later, their anatomic diameter reached 2-7 mm(averaged 3.6 mm). It was proved that the subdermal nodules were trabecular ball trapped with fibrous tissue. The nodules were investigated by human special apoB gene with PCR, and the test of anti-human-tissue precipitin reaction(AHTPR). The results of PCR and AHTPR were positive reaction. There were no subdermal nodules formed in the sites of injection of frozen-melted PMSC or culture medium. The new callus in the sites of fracture were tested by PCR test, and two kinds of apoB gene products were detected. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the implanted PMSC could form new bone directly in nude mice, and the cells of donor and recipient all could form new bone.

[Biomechanics of traction for treatment of lumber disc prolapse].

The intervertebral distance in 31 prolapsed discs under traction increased on the average by 1.34 mm, but in normal discs 0.87 mm. Of 47 prolapsed discs without traction, 29 had negative intradisc pressure, 10 zero, and 8 positive. The total average value of the pressure before traction was -1.3 kPa. Under lumber traction, the pressure decreased in 30 discs, unchanged in 8, and increased in 9, with the average value being -3.2 kPa. The intradisc pressure in 7 normal discs was contrary to the pressure in the prolapsed disc. The difference between the two groups was highly significant (P < 0.01). The pressure unchanged when the intervertebral distance of prolapsed disc unchanged under traction, but the pressure decreased as the distance increased in most cases under traction.

[Peroxidative antimalaria mechanism of sodium artesunate].

Peroxidative antimalaria action of sodium artesunate was studied in vitro. Under alkaline conditions, sodium artesunate could produce active oxygen species, including the superoxide anion (O2-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), but no O2- or H2O2 was produced by the drug at pH 7.4. However, sodium artesunate could increase the concentration of O2- and H2O2 in erythrocytes by increasing membrane lipid peroxidation, with this action being more marked in infected than in normal erythrocytes.
