[Linezolid, the first oxazolidinone antibiotic].

The spread of multiresistant Staphylococcus and Enterococcus strains required the development of new drugs. Linezolid is the first molecule of a new antibiotic family, oxazolidinones, with an original mechanism of action. In this general review, the authors first present its antibacterial activity, its pharmacokinetic properties, its therapeutic uses in serious Gram-positive infections, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and also in other indications. They then explain the rules for administration and tolerability.

[Radiographic diagnosis in bone and joint infection management].

Radiographic diagnosis plays an important role in bone and joint infection management but the techniques used do not all present the same interest. Conventional radiography may not be informative during the first weeks and ultrasonography is especially useful to show accumulation of intra articular fluid or edematous soft-tissue. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, bone scintigraphy are the best exams for this diagnosis. According to the type of infection (septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, spondylodiskitis, diabetic foot, prosthetic joint infection), and to anatomical localization, the examination is chosen depending on its sensitivity and its specificity for bone and joint infection management.

[Inflammatory markers in dialysis: epidemiological data].

Inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein are frequently elevated in patients treated by dialysis. Serum concentration of these markers are much higher than in the general population, in which it has been clearly shown that chronic inflammation is associated to the occurrence of cardiovascular events. The mechanisms leading to chronic inflammation in dialysis patients may be related to chronic inflammation per se, or to dialysis. Furthermore, in these patients, raised inflammatory markers are associated to malnutrition and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The association of inflammation, malnutrition and atherosclerosis defines the so-called MIA syndrome.

[Partial trisomy 14q II.--Partial trisomy 14q due to a maternal t(12; 14) (q24.4; q21)].

The phenotype of an 18-month-old male infant trisomic for the proximal portion of the long arm of chromosome 14 was reported and compared with that of previously reported cases. For the identification of the resulting syndrome, the most consistent features are psychomotor and growth retardation, and an oval, dysmorphic facies which includes a distinctive form of the mouth and a prominent nose. The trisomy in the child reported here is due to a familial translocation transmitted by the mother and present in at least three generations: t(12;14)(q24.4;q21). The 12q duplication in the child's genome is minimal and does not seem to have contributed to his phenotype.
