[Histiocytosis X: excavated macronodular form. Initial alveolar phase with spontaneous regression. Role of smoking].

This is a case report of a 39 year old patient in whom histiocytosis X was discovered following a cough which had appeared several months before. The radiological investigations were distinctive immediately associating the alveolar lesions and the excavated macronodules. The clinical examination was normal but there were some laboratory features suggesting inflammation. The diagnosis was achieved following a surgical biopsy which on histological examination showed histiocytic granulomas and the immunology revealed cells which were positive for OK T6 monoclonal antibodies and S100 antiprotein antibodies. There was subsequently a spontaneous regression with disappearance of the nodular shadows only leaving a few cystic forms. This observation is distinctive and is characterised by the rare appearance of the initial radiology and also confirms the predisposing factor of smoking in the pathogenesis of histiocytosis X.

[Liposomes of artificial surfactant and phase transition].

The respiratory distress syndrome in the new born is due to a deficiency of surfactant at the level of the gas-liquid interface of the pulmonary alveoli. Some recent treatments advocate the administration of artificial surfactant to mitigate this deficiency. In this article, the interfacial properties of sterile liposomes of the phospholipid surfactant were studied on a Langmuir balance film (isotherms of air-surface pressure II-A) during the course of compression-expansion cycles, simulating the respiratory cycles of compression-expansion cycles, simulating the respiratory cycles of inspiration-expiration. In the transition zone from the gel-crystal of liquid phospholipids, the isotherms issued from mixed liposomes show two pressure plateaux, which correspond to the collapse of the pure phases constituting them. In addition to their structural similarity with the sites of storing surfactant at the level of the lamellar bodies, the liposomes have the facility to act to the interface as an easily accessible reservoir and thus enable an artificial surfactant activity during the course of numerous respiratory cycles. The differences of behaviour at the interface of the liposomes with phospholipid films exposed with the aid of a volatile organic solvent, studied classically, explain themselves by preferential interface exchanges.

Experimental infarct sizing using computer processing and a three-dimensional model.

A method for noninvasive sizing of myocardial infarction, in which data from technetium-99m stannous pyrophosphate scintigrams and a three-dimensional model were used, was tested on experimental, acute anterior infarcts in dogs. The results indicate that the method does size experimental anterior infarcts accurately, but further testing will be necessary to assess the capabilities of the technique for sizing other types of infarcts.
