High frequency dynamics in a monatomic glass.

The high frequency dynamics of glassy selenium has been studied by inelastic x-ray scattering at beam line BL35XU (SPring-8). The high quality of the data allows one to pinpoint the existence of a dispersing acoustic mode for wave vectors (Q) of 1.5<Q<12.5 nm(-1), helping to clarify a previ-ous contradiction between experimental and numerical results. The sound velocity shows a positive dispersion, exceeding the hydrodynamic value by approximately 10% at Q<3.5 nm(-1). The Q2 dependence of the sound attenuation Gamma(Q), reported for other glasses, is found to be the low-Q limit of a more general Gamma(Q) proportional, variant Omega(Q)(2) law, which applies also to the higher Q region, where Omega(Q) proportional, variant Q no longer holds.

[Bases for cost calculations in x-ray facilities].

Economic implications of running an X-ray department in Switzerland will be illustrated by comparing operating costs of private radiological institutes with and without CT to the operating costs of large radiological departments in hospitals with and without CT and to the operating costs of simple X-ray equipment in general practitioners' offices. These cost calculations form the basis for cost-benefit analyses.

[Malignant tumors of the upper urinary passages (author's transl)].

Malignant tumors of the upper urinary passages are more frequent than one had formerly thought. Eleven case reports are presented in order to explain X-ray and differential diagnosis. The treatment consists in surgical nephrourethrectomy with lymphadenectomy. There are only few reports about indication and value of radiotherapy. A postoperative irradiation of the primary tumor region and the lymphatic outflow region is recommended for the stages B, C and D (without remote metastases). The suggested target volumes and doses are described.

[Practical experience with video recorders during screening procedures (author's transl)].

As a result of increasing standardisation and simplification of video recorders, it has proved possible to use equipment made by various firms for electronic recording. Instead of an expensive central set-up, screening procedures could be recorded either dynamically or statically on mobile recorders in every x-ray room. The procedure is largely automated. Both tape and disc recorders were used in 625 and 1249 recordings respectively. In addition to shorter screening time, there were other advantages which are described.

[Radiological reporting systems. The viewpoint of the central radiodiagnostic department in an university hospital (author's transl)].

The use of automatic Roentgen diagnostic reporting systems is limited. Therefore, the capabilities of these systems should be expanded, and should include an integral patient identification as well as relevant data regarding the clinical patient information. By this way, appropriate data considering payments and statistics can be collected. In addition, there is selective access to the data from previous investigations. Thus, the evaluation of the entire information about a patient, including a verification of previous diagnosis is possible. Based on the radiology reporting system of Wheeler (Sirep, Siemens Ltd.) and of Vadraux-Vernier (Sacre, CGR, Ltd.), an additional set of input and output parameter is described as well as their use in a system comprising a small central processor and large external storage unit.
