Laboratory rat associated outbreak of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome due to Hantaan-like virus in Belgium.

Hantaan-like virus was identified as the cause of three cases of acute renal failure in staff handling laboratory rats on a Belgian university campus. Serological studies revealed infected rat strains at different sites on the campus and evidence of past and recent infections in 39 staff members and of infection in 50% of exposed staff. Hantaan-reactive antibody was very rare in control populations. Staff or rats at three other Belgian institutions had no signs of infection. The origin of the virus was not identified. Infected rats have been removed. These are the first confirmed cases, outside East Asia, of human illness due to rat-borne Hantaan-like virus, and of infection in laboratory rats. Surveillance of rat colonies is also recommended in countries which, like Belgium, have no previously recognised cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

[An introductive approach to linguistics (author's transl)].

The author proposes an information on the semiological approach to language starting from the systemic perspective (later to be said structuralist) which has been introduced by the Saussure. A group of notions can be delineated, which are distributed in binomial oppositions: language and verb, synchronia and diachronia, meaning and signified (which define the linguistic sign, which arbitrary character is being discussed) and other oppositions. The descriptive study of linguistic units of the chain concerns phonetics and phonology. The regulations for constructing a coherent message concern grammar (or syntax), where the traditional, normative approach is in opposition with actual research, descriptive and structural: distributionnal grammar, transforming, categorial, functional. The application of new linguistic methods to human sciences is very promising and opens the way of an interesting meditation on human condition.

[About the systemic frame of psychotherapy].

Like in linguistic, one can distinguish two main fields of application of systemic family therapy: the structural field (or constitutive) and the semantic field. Both belong to the large systemic system (the word much less than ecological much greater than is closed to it). In a previous article, the author has studied the first field through linguistic, and in this article we deal mainly with the second field, with the help of text and context Bateson's as a leading mean. This fundamental relativistic perspective leads to such concepts as isomorfism and analogy, metascopy and metatheoretical attitude, aperceptive habits of thinking and learning frame, primary and secondary learning, paradox and double-blind. It finally leads to a systemic ethic and considerations about semiology and communication, institution and family, human history and adolescence, psychosis and psychotherapy (proceeding from a theoretical approach very different from classical scientific theory).

Expression of MAGE genes in esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma.

The genes MAGE-1, -2, -3 and -4 are expressed in tumors of different histological types, but not in normal tissues, with the exception of testis and placenta. Short peptides derived from MAGE-1 and MAGE-3 gene products are recognized by cytolytic T lymphocytes when presented by HLA-class-I molecules, and represent potential targets for specific immunotherapy. We have determined whether esophageal carcinoma patients should be eligible for MAGE-peptide-based vaccine therapies. The expression of genes MAGE-1, -2, -3 and -4 in tumor samples was assessed by reverse-transcription and polymerase-chain-reaction amplification. Out of the 49 esophageal squa-mous-cell carcinomas studied, 53% expressed MAGE-1, 49% MAGE-2, 47% MAGE-3 and 71% MAGE-4. Eighty-four percent of the tumors expressed one or more of the four MAGE genes. Owing to the high incidence of MAGE gene expression in esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma, a large proportion of patients could be suitable candidates for immune therapies involving tumor-specific antigens encoded by MAGE genes.
