Radionuclide transfer to fruits: a critical review. Introduction.

This paper provides a brief introduction to fruit, their definition, classification and geographical distribution. In the following review, the term "fruit" refers not to a well-defined botanical plant part but, in the horticultural sense, to a component of the human diet generally consumed as a dessert item. Plants that bear fruits cover a vast range of morphological and physiological traits. A generic classification of fruit-bearing plants is proposed for use in studies on radionuclide transfer to fruit.

Post-deposition transport of radionuclides in fruit.

This paper considers two main pathways for contamination of fruit by radionuclides: (i) absorption after deposition directly to exposed fruit surfaces, and (ii) absorption after deposition to other exposed plant surfaces followed by translocation to fruit. The aim is to collect the available information on fruit from temperate regions, identify the factors affecting post deposition processes in fruit plant systems, identify gaps in knowledge and give recommendations for future work. The majority of information available on above-ground absorption and further translocation to fruit concerns 134Cs and 85Sr in soluble form in apple, strawberry and grapevine. In general, 85Sr is absorbed and translocated to a lesser extent than is 134Cs. The rate of absorption and translocation depends on the physiological stage and age of the plant, and varies between different plant species and varieties.

Radionuclide transfer from soil to fruit.

The available literature on the transfer of radionuclides from soil to fruit has been reviewed with the aim of identifying the main variables and processes affecting the behaviour of radionuclides in fruit plants. Where available, data for transfer of radionuclides from soil to other components of fruit plant have also been collected, to help in understanding the processes of translocation and storage in perennial plants. Soil-to-fruit transfer factors were derived from agricultural ecosystems, both from temperate and subtropical or tropical zones. Aggregated transfer factors have also been collected from natural or semi-natural ecosystems. The data concern numerous fruits and various radionuclides. Soil-to-fruit transfer is nuclide specific. The variability for a given radionuclide is first of all ascribable to the different properties of soils. Fruit plant species are very heterogeneous, varying from woody trees and shrubs to herbaceous plants. In temperate areas the soil-to-fruit transfer is higher in woody trees for caesium and in shrubs for strontium. Significant differences between the values obtained in temperate and subtropical and tropical regions do not necessarily imply that they are ascribable to climate. Transfer factors for caesium are higher in subtropical and tropical fruits, while those for strontium, as well as for plutonium and americium, in the same fruits, are lower; these results can be interpreted taking into account different soil characteristics.

Tachykinin NK(2) receptors and enhancement of cholinergic transmission in the inflamed rat colon: an in vivo motility study.

In the gastrointestinal tract, tachykinin NK(2) receptors are localized both on smooth muscle and nerve fibres. NK(2) receptor antagonists reduce exaggerated intestinal motility in various diarrhoea models but the site of action contributing to this effect is unknown. In this study we investigated the effects of atropine (1.4 micromol kg(-1), i.v.), hexamethonium (13.5 micromol kg(-1), i.v.), and nepadutant (0.1 micromol kg(-1), i.v.), a selective tachykinin NK(2) receptor antagonist, on distension (0.5 and 1 ml)-, or irritation (acetic acid, 0.5 ml of 7.5% v v(-1))-induced motility in the rat distal colon in vivo. The effects of atropine, hexamethonium or N(omega)-nitro-L-argininemethylester (L-NAME, 1.85 micromol kg(-1), i.v.) on [betaAla(8)]NKA(4-10) (10 nmol kg(-1), i.v.)-induced colonic contractions were also investigated. When the colonic balloon was filled with a subthreshold volume (0.5 ml), the intraluminal instillation of acetic acid triggered a high-amplitude phasic colonic motility which was partially reduced by nepadutant and suppressed by either hexamethonium or atropine. Filling of the balloon with 1 ml evoked reflex (hexamethonium-sensitive), atropine-sensitive phasic colonic motility: nepadutant had no significant effect on the distension-evoked motility. Neither hexamethonium nor atropine significantly reduced [betaAla(8)]NKA(4-10)-induced colonic contractions, whereas nepadutant suppressed them. Following L-NAME pretreatment, [betaAla(8)]NKA(4-10)-induced colonic contractions were inhibited by both atropine and hexamethonium. In hexamethonium-pretreated animals, an atropine-sensitive component of [betaAla(8)]NKA(4-10)-induced colonic contractions was also evident. These results indicate that the application of irritants onto the colonic mucosa induces the release of endogenous tachykinins which enhance excitatory cholinergic mechanisms through the stimulation of NK(2) receptors.

Nepadutant pharmacokinetics and dose-effect relationships as tachykinin NK2 receptor antagonist are altered by intestinal inflammation in rodent models.

Tachykinin NK2 receptor antagonists could reduce motility and symptoms during gastrointestinal diseases characterized by local inflammation such as diarrhea or colitis; however, how these conditions change pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics of NK2 receptor antagonists is unknown. We investigated the effect of the peptide NK2 receptor antagonist nepadutant on spontaneous intestinal motility or [betaAla8]NKA(4-10)-induced colonic and bladder contractions in rodent models of intestinal inflammation (enteritis induced by castor oil and rectocolitis induced by local instillation of acetic acid in rats, enteritis induced by bacterial toxins in mice). In the castor oil model, the oral/intraduodenal bioavailability of nepadutant was also determined. The intrarectal (i.r.) administration of nepadutant (100 nmol/kg) did not reduce [betaAla8]NKA(4-10) (10 nmol/kg i.v.)-induced colonic and bladder contractions in normal animals, but the same dose of nepadutant produced an inhibitory effect in the two organs following rectocolitis; in contrast, nepadutant is equieffective by the intravenous route in normal and colitic animals. In this model, nepadutant (100 nmol/kg i.r. or i.v.) decreased spontaneous colonic hypermotility, without affecting motility in controls. The intraduodenal administration of nepadutant (30 nmol/kg), which was ineffective on [betaAla8]NKA(4-10) (10 nmol/kg i.v.)-induced colonic and bladder contractions in control animals, abolished bladder contractions in castor oil-pretreated animals. In this latter group, the oral and intraduodenal bioavailability of nepadutant showed a 7- to 9-fold increase with respect to controls. Oral administration of nepadutant, in nanomolar or subnanomolar dosage, reduced diarrhea induced by bacterial toxins in mice. It is concluded that intestinal inflammation increases nepadutant absorption in the intestine, enhancing its activity. These results suggest that a drug with a limited oral bioavailability could be used for treating gastrointestinal diseases associated with a local inflammation.

Peripheral actions of tachykinins.

Tachykinins mediate a variety of physiological processes in the gastrointestinal, pulmonary and genito-urinary tract mainly through the stimulation of NK1 and NK2 receptors. Preclinical evidence obtained through the use of selective tachykinin receptor antagonists indicates that endogenous tachykinins are involved in augmented smooth muscle contraction, vasodilatation, chemotaxis and activation of immune cells, mucus secretion, water absorption/secretion. Recent evidence also suggests that endogenous tachykinins released at the peripheral level may play a role in visceral inflammation, hyperreflexia and hyperalgesia. Possible mechanisms underlying the stimulation of primary afferent neurons by tachykinins may involve a direct excitation of these neurons and the release of mediators which sensitise or stimulate sensory nerves. Tachykinin receptor antagonists could have a clinical utility in several human diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, and in micturition disturbances characterized by a hyperactive bladder.

134Cs and 85Sr in fruit plants following wet aerial deposition.

The knowledge of processes concerning the radiocontamination of fruit after a spike release can improve the understanding of exposure through ingestion of food and better assess the public dose. The fate of 134Cs and 85Sr in the above ground part of different species of fruit plants after wet deposition on leaves or on fruits was compared. Grapevines, apple trees, and pear trees grown under field conditions were contaminated with 134Cs and 85Sr either via leaves or via fruits before ripening. Spiked and non-spiked fruits and leaves were picked 50 d later, at harvest time, and their 134Cs and 85Sr contents were measured by gamma spectrometry. The residual fraction in leaves was on average 7% of the initially applied 134Cs and 8% of 85Sr, while that in fruits was 60% of 134Cs and 28% of 85Sr. Rinsing of fruits before consumption causes a loss of 24% for 134Cs and 36% for 85Sr present in fruit at harvest. Leaf-to-fruit transfer factors are considerably higher for 134Cs, 4% of the applied activity, than for 85Sr, 0.04%. Leaf-to-leaf are also higher on average for 134Cs than for 85Sr. Transfer also occurs from spiked fruits to leaves; its extent is affected more by the kind of plant than by the radionuclide. 134Cs and 85Sr are transferred to fruits and leaves of non-contaminated branches to a lesser extent than within the contaminated branches.

Immunohistochemical localization of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) in the excretory system of the rabbit parotid gland.

The immunohistochemical localization of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) in the rabbit parotid gland was performed using an antibody against rabbit ANF and avidin-biotin or streptoavidin as detector. Results showed positivity in cuboidal and columnar cells of intralobular ducts and in basal cells of extralobular and main excretory duct. These data support the hypothesis that ANF produced by intralobular ducts could act through a paracrine mechanism; ANF produced by extralobular and main ducts may play a role in the regulation of salivary composition.

Foliar and soil uptake of 134Cs and 85Sr by grape vines.

The foliar and soil uptake of 134Cs and 85Sr by grape vines and their subsequent translocation to fruits and to the other plant compartments is described. Grape vine plants growing in pots and kept in an open field were contaminated with 134Cs and 85Sr in ionic form by sprinkling on the aerial part, or by addition to the soil. Sprinkling was effected at the stage of ripening of the grapes. Interception, determined by analysing all the leaves picked from three plants after the sprinkling, was approx. 50% of the sprayed activity. Soil contamination was effected after the fruit setting, 1 month earlier than sprinkling. At ripening, the whole plant was picked. Berries, leaves, shoots, stems, roots and soil were analysed by gamma spectrometry. Activities of the different parts of the plant were expressed as: (a) translocation factors of intercepted activity for foliar treatment; (b) transfer factors of activity applied to the soil for soil treatment. Both factors were calculated per unit of fresh weight, or referred to the total biomass of the plant compartment. Leaf-to-fruit translocation factors per unit of weight are of the order of magnitude of 10(-1) for 134Cs and of 10(-2) for 85Sr. One/two order of magnitude lower are soil-to-fruit transfer factors: 10(-3) both for 134Cs and for 85Sr. Radiocesium behaves quite differently from radiostrontium, but the behaviour of both radionuclides within the grape vine is independent of the path of absorption, by leaves or by roots. 134Cs is absorbed more easily than 85Sr by plant foliage, but is absorbed with more difficulty than 85Sr by roots. After absorption by either route, radiocesium concentrates mainly in the fruit compartment of the plant, whereas radiostrontium concentrates in the foliar compartment. Loss from the aerial part of the plant is higher for 85Sr than for 134Cs. 85Sr remains more available in soil than 134Cs, is more absorbed by roots and is more leached downward. After foliar contamination, the dominant pathway of radionuclides to reach the soil is by dislodging of non-absorbed radionuclides or senescent cells from the aerial part of the plant by action of wind and rain.

Cesium-134 and strontium-85 in strawberry plants following wet aerial deposition.

The understanding of the processes that control the behavior of radionuclides in crops can support policymakers to take actions to protect the environment and safeguard human health. Data concerning the behavior of radionuclides in fruits are limited. Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne) plants were contaminated on the aboveground part by sprinkling an aqueous solution of 134Cs and 85Sr at three growing stages: predormancy, anthesis, and beginning of ripening. Intercepted activity was more affected by the posture and physical orientation of leaves rather than by leaf area or biomass. Fruit interception ranges from 0.2 to 1.2% of the sprinkled activity. Translocation coefficients from leaf to fruit are on the order of 10(-4) for 134Cs and 10(-5) for 85Sr. Translocation reaches its highest intensity between anthesis and ripening. If deposition occurs when plants are bearing fruits, the fruit activity will be affected by the activity initially deposited on the fruit surfaces. This is important for 85Sr as it is not translocated in the phloem. The loss of the dead leaves at the resumption of growth causes high plant decontamination, but a fraction of both radionuclides remains in the storage organs, roots, and shoots, which is retranslocated to fruits in the following spring. The values of the environmental half-time, t(w), after deposition at predormancy are 114 d for 134Cs and 109 d for 85Sr. Cesium-134 tends to be allocated to fruits, while 85Sr remains in leaves and crowns. Translocation of radionuclides to roots results in soil contamination.

[Laparoscopic adrenalectomy: our preliminary experience].

INTRODUCTION: In 1992, Gagner described the first laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Since then this technique has been more and more widely employed and several studies confirmed its advantages, comparing to the traditional approach, in terms of reduction of mean hospital stay and therefore of the health expense. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Authors' preliminary experience spreads from March to November 2003 when 4 patients were studied and thus underwent a transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy: 2 of them were affected by Cushing syndrome, 1 by pheochromocytoma in MEN and 1 by an incidentaloma. The transabdominal access in lateral decubitus with 4 trocars was performed. RESULTS: No complication was reported with a minimal need of analgesic drugs. The mean hospital stay was 4 days and all patients were discharged 48 hours after surgery. The mean diameter of nodules was 40 +/- 30 mm. The definitive histological examination showed 2 cortical adenomas, 1 diffuse cortical hyperplasia and 1 pheochromocytoma. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary report confirms the optimal results of other experienced authors. Further interventions will be necessary for improvements and technical requirements.

[Variation of the transverse apophysis of the 7th cervical vertebra: anatomo-radiological study of an isolated population].

The authors investigated the morphological changes in the transverse apophysis of C VII by Rx study on an isolated population. Two variations were mainly observed: the transverse mega-apophysis and the cervical rib. The authors found a remarkable incidence of variations, more than the average of the literature. Authors suppose that this results can be attributed at the geographical and economical isolation of the population and they hypothesize a genetic transmission of recessive autosomal type.

The prenatal morphology of the articular disk of the human temporomandibular joint.

The prenatal morphology and ultrastructural of the articular disk of the human temporomandibular joint was studied to determine their relationship to the corresponding adult characteristics. The articular disks of seven human fetuses ranging in age from 10 to 32 weeks' gestation were examined. Our results show that the fetal articular disk has a genetically pre-determined appearance that substantially prefigures that of the adult. In profile, it was seen to be thin at the center and thick toward the periphery, like the adult structure; likewise, it was denser centrally than peripherally. Basically, it was found to be a fibrous structure: it was composed of a large number of connective tissue cells, while the blood vessels were limited to the periphery. A large number of elastic fibers was also observed. Posteriorly, they had a longitudinal orientation along the junction with the postglenoid tubercle of the temporal bone; along the periphery, they ran in an annular fashion.
