Haematocrit values and plasma glucose, calcium and magnesium concentrations were determined in blood samples collected at slaughter from 105 sheep that were prostrate, comatose, and unable to stand (downer sheep) on arrival at a Queensland meatworks. These values were compared to published normal concentration ranges of these plasma constituents and to values from blood samples taken from 107 apparently normal animals at slaughter. Eleven per cent of the "downer" sheep were considered hypocalcaemic, 13% showed varying degrees of hypoglycaemia and 22% were considered hyperglycaemic.
Five trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of the presence of horns on cattle on carcase bruising. In each trial there were three groups of cattle, hornless, horned and mixed (some with hrons and some without). The weight of bruised tissue trimmed from the carcases of the cattle in the horned groups was significantly greater than that trimmed from the carcases of the cattle in the hornless groups. When horned and hornless cattle are mixed the hornless animals in the mixed group sustain significantly more bruising than animals in a group consisting soley of hornless animals while the horned animals in a mixed group have a similar degree of bruising to cattle in a group consisting solely of horned cattle.
The activity of the enzyme psi-glutamyl transpeptidase (psi-GT) was measured in the urine of sheep. In clinically normal animals the mean value was 6-3+/-0-6 mU/ml. In sheep with kidney damage induced by the administration of mercuric chloride there were marked increases in urinary concentrations of psi-GT, in some cases values in excess of 1000 mU/ml were recorded. This enzyme may be of value in the diagnosis of certain forms of renal disease.
