Gliomas of the optic nerve are rare, comprising only 1% of intracranial neoplasms in adults and 5% in children. This is the first recorded case of a ganglioglioma of the optic nerve. A 2-year-old White boy presented with a convergent squint and blindness of the left eye. At operation a pale, firm, fusiform swelling was found. The cytological and histopathological features are described.
Cystic meningiomas are relatively rare, but are occasionally seen. Two of these cases resembled glioblastomas or grade II astrocytomas.
Recanalization of blocked vessels by means of transluminal recanalization is a highly successful procedure provided there is proper patient selection. The results vary according to the skill of the operator, and when successful, they are most dramatic.
Ten cases of pituitary micro-adenomas are reported. Skull radiographs and tomography were negative or questionable in all 10 cases. All patients were scanned because of changes in the endocrine system governed by the pituitary fossa. All patients presented clinically with symptoms which indicated the presence of micro-adenomas. Surgery verified 4 cases which were proved to be adenomas on histological examination.
The treatment of 51 patients with proven cerebral aneurysms is reviewed. The management is discussed and the relative safety of the microneurosurgical operation is stressed.
A technique for selective anterior hypophysectomy along a transsphenoidal route in the cat is described in detail. This operation is valuable for advanced microneurosurgical training.
