Antigen e and its antibody were sought by radial immunodiffusion in 86 carriers of HBs antigen observed over a period of one year. The antigen was found in 3 cases out of 30 with acute viral hepatitis, 11 cases out of 33 with chronic active hepatitis, 1 case out of 6 with chronic persistent hepatitis and 1 out of 6 healthy carriers. It was not found in the serum of 6 patients with fulminating hepatitis. The presence of antigen e is associated with high titers of circulating HBs antigens (p less than 0,001). In this group, no difference in the course of the disease was found in cases of chronic active hepatitis with HBs antigen, according to the presence or absence of antigen e or its antibody.

Even if all problems of liver metabolism have not yet been clarified, it is nevertheless established that medicaments induces enzymes in the hepatic cells which influence the metabolism of drugs. Because their effect is unspecific, these enzymes can catabolize many drugs with different structures. About 200 substances are known which induce such enzymes. Among them, for example, is phenobarbital. It is therefore used in the treatment of some forms of icterus with freee bilirubin and for Cushing's syndrome. But enzyme induction can also lead to acute intermittent porphyrias and distrubances of the phosphorus-calcium metabolism. Extreme catabolism of a drug can be caused by overinduction of enzymes due to the administration of several incompatible medicaments.
Regular observation of 40 patients treated with Cortalugel 20 confirmed that the association of aluminum phosphate with prednisolone produced no phenomenon of chelation and did not affect absorption of the latter compound. The product was well-tolerated by the digestive system during prolonged administration for the treatment of hepatic and gastro-enterological diseases for which corticotherapy is usually administered.
A new case of Reynold's syndrome is reported. This patient was a 70 years old woman with scleroderma (grade II) and PBC (grade III - IV), associated with Sjögren's syndrome and cryoglobulinemia. She experienced 10 years earlier Raynaud's syndrome and arthralgia. A review of the Literature reveals 22 other detailed cases whose data are collected in this study. Considerations upon a common pathophysiology for scleroderma, PBC and Sjögren's syndrome are developed. Impairment of the function of suppressor T cells in patients undergoing these diseases is possible.
The authors report their preliminary results of a study of the possible therapeutic activity of a titrated extract of Centella asiatica in chronic hepatic disorders. Early results are encouraging, especially from a histological point of view, where improvement in the criteria evaluated was noted in 5 of the 12 patients treated for the longest time. These results have to be assessed in a critical manner until confirmation is obtained by complementary studies.
