Transport of magnetic field by a turbulent flow of liquid sodium.

We study the effect of a turbulent flow of liquid sodium generated in the von Kármán geometry, on the localized field of a magnet placed close to the frontier of the flow. We observe that the field can be transported by the flow on distances larger than its integral length scale. In the most turbulent configurations, the mean value of the field advected at large distance vanishes. However, the rms value of the fluctuations increases linearly with the magnetic Reynolds number. The advected field is strongly intermittent.

Influence of turbulence on the dynamo threshold.

We use direct and stochastic numerical simulations of the magnetohydrodynamic equations to explore the influence of turbulence on the dynamo threshold. In the spirit of the Kraichnan-Kazantsev model, we model the turbulence by a noise, with given amplitude, injection scale, and correlation time. The addition of a stochastic noise to the mean velocity significantly alters the dynamo threshold and increases it for any noise at large scale. For small-scale noise, the result depends on its correlation time and on the magnetic Prandtl number.

Properties of steady states in turbulent axisymmetric flows.

We experimentally study the properties of mean and most probable velocity fields in a turbulent von Kármán flow. These fields are found to be described by two families of functions, as predicted by a recent statistical mechanics study of 3D axisymmetric flows. We show that these functions depend on the viscosity and on the forcing. Furthermore, when the Reynolds number is increased, we exhibit a tendency for Beltramization of the flow, i.e., a velocity-vorticity alignment. This result provides a first experimental evidence of nonlinearity depletion in nonhomogeneous nonisotropic turbulent flow.

Microdisplacements induced by a local perturbation inside a granular packing.

The microdisplacements generated by a small localized overload at the free surface are visualized experimentally inside a packing of steel beads. For a triangular packing, beads rearrangements remain confined in two inverted triangles on both sides of the applied overload. This pattern disappears for stronger disorder. A simple model allows us to account for these observations and to relate them to the stress function response measured via photoelastic visualizations. This provides a different tool to probe the mechanical Green's function in weakly confined packings of rigid grains the description of which is the most challenged.

Nonlinear magnetic induction by helical motion in a liquid sodium turbulent flow.

We report an experimental study of the magnetic field B--> induced by a turbulent swirling flow of liquid sodium submitted to a transverse magnetic field B-->(0). We show that the induced field can behave nonlinearly as a function of the magnetic Reynolds number, R(m). At low R(m), the induced mean field along the axis of the flow, , and the one parallel to B-->(0), , first behave like R(2)(m), whereas the third component, , is linear in R(m). The sign of is determined by the flow helicity. At higher R(m), B--> strongly depends on the local geometry of the mean flow: decreases to zero in the core of the swirling flow but remains finite outside. We compare the experimental results with the computed magnetic induction due to the mean flow alone.

Multiscale clustering in granular surface flows.

We investigate steady granular surface flows in a rotating drum and demonstrate the existence of rigid clusters of grains embedded in the flowing layer. These clusters appear to be fractal and their size is power law distributed from the grain size scale up to the thickness of the flowing layer. The implications of the absence of a characteristic length scale on available theoretical models of dense granular flows are discussed. Finally, we suggest a possible explanation of the difference between velocity profiles observed in surface flows and in flows down a rough inclined plane.

Rapid fractionation of grape seed proanthocyanidins.

A rapid method that permits separation of grape seed proanthocyanidins according to their polymerization degrees has been developed. This method was based on liquid/liquid extraction and relative solubility of these compounds in different solvents (water, ethyle acetate, methanol, and chloroform). The different fractions obtained were then analyzed by various HPLC techniques (normal phase, reversed phase after thiolysis, and gel permeation) to determine their mean degree of polymerization (DP) and molecular weight profiles. Results show that this method can be used on a preparative scale to separate these polymers according to their sizes.
