Guiding patients and their families through peripheral stem cell transplantation with the help of a teaching booklet.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: To present a booklet designed to educate patients and their families about peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSC). DATA SYNTHESIS: The booklet describes the procedure, self-care, preliminary chemotherapy regimens, necessary follow-up tests, and appropriate resources. CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary evaluation indicates the booklet has been well-received and appreciated by patients and nursing staff alike. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The booklet supplements basic patient education in regard to PBSC, anticipates patient questions, and provides patients and families with a take-home, written resource.

Paclitaxel (TAXOL): side effects and patient education issues.

Paclitaxel (TAXOL), a new and exciting antimicrotubule agent, is indicated after failure of first-line or subsequent chemotherapy for the treatment of metastatic carcinoma of the ovary. Phase II studies also have shown impressive responses in cancers of the breast and lung. This article describes the side effects that have been reported thus far in a variety of settings. Included in the discussion of each side effect are the preventive measures, the manifestations, the patients at risk, and the actions to take if any adverse reaction should occur. The patient education issues involved in treatment with paclitaxel also are covered in this article. These include the kind of information to give patients regarding side effects, follow-up studies, and administration of related medication. Consideration of patients' unfamiliarity with the health care system also is discussed.

A new gastric carcinoma cell line (LIM1839) derived from a young Caucasian male.

We describe a new and unique gastric carcinoma cell line (LIM1839) derived from a young Caucasian male with rapidly progressing disease. The cell line grows with a pleomorphic morphology and has been in continuous culture for more than 3 years. The cells cannot be cloned in semi-solid agar or grown in nude mice despite numerous attempts. The karyotype of the cultured cells is highly abnormal with a large number of structural and numerical changes. Some chromosomes are dicentric and this feature has persisted in this culture. The cells express one of the small-intestinal dipeptidases, aminopeptidase N, but do not express dipeptidyl peptidase IV or the disaccharidases, sucrase isomaltase or maltase glucoamylase. The cells express high levels of EGF receptors and of messenger RNA for insulin-like growth factor II.

Similarity and differences between conditions for initiation and failure of detonation.

A theory is proposed to study the sensitivity of cylindrical explosives. Using the equations governing the conservation of mass, energy, and momentum, the equation of state, and Newtonian mechanics, we have derived the expression D = D(o)e(-a2/d), in which the apparent length of the reaction zone, a, takes into account burned and unburned explosive and pressure release through the back and sides of the reaction zone. D is the detonation velocity and d is the diameter of the cylindrical charge. From the observed D(1/d) curves and critical energy values, we can interpret failure and other phenomena associated with detonation.
