Values and ideals, isms and ologies: making contact across a desert of differences.

The issue of communication and dialogue between academic and service public health professionals is explored. It is noted that each individual operates within his/her own personal attitudes, values and beliefs framework which has the potential to produce serious obstacles to effective communication if not taken into account and managed. The preconceptions of academic public health professionals about their service counterparts and vice versa are identified and discussed. A workshop held at the Nuffield Institute for Health, Leeds, in June 1993 is used as an example of what can happen when these barriers to communication are identified and handled sensitively.

The art of public health medicine.

This paper discusses the two dimensions of public health medicine competence--science and art--and explores the reasons for the importance of public health medicine artistry within an organisational context. The skills of artistry are identified as political and people management and it is noted that although the science dimension is vital, without the skills that comprise artistry, public health physicians are inadequately prepared to tackle the work of improving the health of the population. It is recommended that these skills should become an integral component of public health medicine training.

Managing people.

Doctors relate to a wide variety of people including patients and their relatives, medical colleagues and other health-care staff and health service managers. In order for these relationships to be effective, they need to possess a high level of people management skills. This paper identifies the nature of the key relationships and presents a model and description of the skills required.
