[Psychological theories on delinquency].

The authors review the various psychological explanations of delinquency, based on a psycholgoical etiological approach, considered within three broad categories: 1) Unchanging intrapersonal factors; 2) Changeable intra-personal factors, and 3) Interpersonal factors. For each theory, three criteria of validity have been used, based on the theory explanatory power in relation to: 1) the differential rates of deliquency for various subgroups, and the peaking at age 16; 2) the various forms of delinquent behavior, and, 3) the individual motivations to delinquency. The implications for prevention, of the different theoretical approaches, are also briefly discussed. The interpersonal theories appear to offer the most fruitful research and action opportunities. The practical implications for primary prevention, particularly at the school level, are discussed.

[Acts of violence from point of view of the criminologist].

Assaultive offences continue to occupy a major share of the interest of criminologists and of the attention of the public. They are defined by the use, or the threat of use of force on a victim by an offender. The paper reviews basic definitions, methods of measuring assaultive crime, and recent phenomenological patterning. Different socio-economic variables are discussed, such as age and sex, urbanization and social class, race, victim-offender relationships, family factors. A brief analysis is presented of child abuse. Various theories have been presented, with different interpretative and explanatory focuses. They are summarized by the Authors under the following headings: a) Barrier theories b) Theories of inevitability c) "Bad influence" theories d) Culture theories. A few cross-cultural examples are given, from existing studies. The postulates of cultural theories are presented, with suggestions for further research.

[Drugs and sexual behavior].

The abundant scientific literature on the addictions does not unclude many papers on the subject of sexual behaviors under the effect of self-administration of drugs. The results of the studies and of the experiments carried out in this field do not allow a classification of drugs in homogeneous groups according to their specific actions on sexual behavior. For each of the most common drugs the most reliable existing data have been examined. Final conclusions cannot be reached for each drug, since several substances may often act, according to many variables, in different cases as depressants or stimulants. The need to study this aspect of drug addiction has been underlined with the aim to improve our knowledge both in the field of the new sexual therapies and of the prevention and control of drug addiction.

[Psychiatric treatment of mentally abnormal delinquents under detention].

The author examines the situation of psychiatric treatment of abnormal offenders under detention, and lists ten problem areas: 1) Lack of interdisciplinarity; 2) Lack of proper diagnostic categories; 3) Lack of definition of treatment goals; 4) Lack of integration into general criminal policy planning; 5) Mistaken emphasis on "prediction"; 6) Politicization of the concept of deviance; 7) Non-recognition, on the part of the professions, of their institutional role--the "who is the client" dilemma; 8) Confusion of forensic with criminal justice system roles; 9) Considering detention an isolated process, and not as part of the criminal justice system continuum; 10) Lack of basic research and of comparative studies.

Crime↗

[The genesis of crime according to dialectic criminology. II. Comments on the genesis of crime].

Prof. Lyra discusses in this article the basic problem of criminological sciences, stating that its essential object of study is the determination of the genesis of crime. The Author states that, before defining the crime genesis, it is necessary to outline, through a synthesis of epistemological restructurization of criminology itself. This way, we can develop a conception of Dialectic Criminology, where the term "dialectic" does not necessarily coincide with a marxist posture, but it extends along much more complex and comprehensive parameters. Dialectic Criminology is defined, in Lyra's conception, as a Classified Criminology, synthetizing both the psychological approach (clinical criminology, or micro-criminology), and the sociological approach (sociological criminology or macro-criminology), according to an anthropological basic frame of reference, which constitutes the new and original prerequisite. To this aim, according to Prof. Lyra, it is necessary to overcome merely biological or psychological theories, and the new sociologisms, which cannot explain deviant behavior without falling into dogmatism or relativism. It is necessary to give back to criminology its original ethico-philosophical roots, and to place the problem of crime within a new "praxis" concept, which takes into account the authentic freedom of man, interracting with historical evolution. This way, through Dialectic Criminology, we can overcome the conception of crime and delinquency viewed as counterparts of the concept of Law.
