Mathematical phenomenology of neural stimulation by periodic fields.

Neuron synchronization has been hypothesized as the basic mechanism leading neurological phenomena like low electroencephalographic rhythm dimension or high coherence. Cognitive processes, such as associative memory, can also be explained in terms of neuron synchronization. Inspired by the analysis of an experiment on cortex periodic photostimulation, in resonance conditions, a simple network of integrate and fire (i and f) neurons, has been used to simulate cognitive perturbations by oscillatory and pulsate stimulation of the central nervous system (CNS). In view of realistic simulations of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) phenomena, a discrete extension of the FitzHug-Nagumo nervous fiber model, endowed with regenerative nodes, has been developed too.

Platelet glycine, glutamate and aspartate in primary headache.

Platelet levels of glutamic and aspartic acid and glycine were measured in patients with migraine with aura, migraine without aura, tension headache and cluster headache. High levels of these amino acids were found in patients with migraine with aura compared to normal subjects and other headache groups. During headache, glutamate levels further increased in migraine with aura patients. These findings may have relevance to the neurological symptoms of migraine with aura.

Personality and memory in childhood migraine.

A series of neuropsychological tests were administered to a group of healthy children and another group suffering from common migraine. The tests demonstrated that children with common migraine do not have definitely abnormal personality traits even though inhibition of aggressivity and greater anxiety levels following certain environmental stimuli were seen. We also observed a decreased short- and long-term memory function in children with common migraine.

Neuropathy in Tangier disease: A clinicopathologic study and a review of the literature.

A new case of Tangier disease is described. It is the 33rd case in world literature and only the 2nd in Italy. A 52-year-old man showed a widely spread neuropathy with facial diplegia, bilateral wasting of hand muscles and dissociated loss of pain and temperature sensation sparing the distal parts of the lower limbs. Clinical and laboratory data were typical of Tangier disease. A histological and ultrastructural study of the patient's superficial peroneal nerve and brevis peroneus muscle was carried out. A revision of the clinical and neuropathological aspects of the neuropathy of Tangier disease allowed our case to be included within a particular neurological description. Four patients with similar clinical characteristics had been noted previously. Clinical, morphological and biochemical data suggest the hypothesis that there are two different neuropathic forms of Tangier disease.
