This study was designed to look at arrangements for menstruating girls in primary schools. We report the results of a questionnaire sent to the head teachers of 344 randomly selected primary schools throughout the UK. Although sanitary towels were available in 90% of schools, most girls had to ask an adult for a towel. Almost 60% of schools had disposal facilities, but in only 43% were facilities situated within individual toilet cubicles. The deficiencies identified in provision for girls in primary schools should be addressed.
In Experiment 1 participants gave 3 successive free recalls of items learned either individually or in pairwise collaboration. The first and third recalls were performed individually, the second alone or in collaboration. Collaborative recall led to an inhibitory effect after individual learning but not after collaborative learning, in which partners had similar retrieval strategies. Consistent with a retrieval locus for collaborative inhibition, non-recalled items reappeared in subsequent individual recall. Experiment 2 showed that collaborative inhibition was eliminated when a separate retrieval cue was given for each item. Experiments 2 and 3 also showed that when participants learned items in the same order, their retrieval strategies were more similar and they showed less collaborative inhibition. It is concluded that mutual interference in collaborative recall is due to the mutual disruption of individual retrieval strategies.
This study was undertaken to evaluate a range of drug information leaflets from both an adolescent and professional perspective. 72 adolescents were interviewed in focus groups within school settings. Fifteen paediatricians were also interviewed individually. Participants were asked to consider the leaflets under the following categories: initial impact, content and overall suitability for adolescents. Paediatricians were not good judges of which leaflets would appeal to adolescents. They tended to choose the leaflets with comic strip illustrations and those written in a 'cool' or witty style. In contrast the adolescents seemed to prefer a more sober approach with high quality factual information combined with clear illustrations.

Preterm infants are more at risk of complications from infectious disease and should be immunised as a matter of priority. This retrospective study followed the immunisations given to 110 premature infants and 220 control term infants admitted to the Neonatal Unit at the Royal United Hospital, Bath over a 12-month period. The overall immunisation uptake for infants admitted to the neonatal unit was 99.93, better than for the general population of the area. However, in both preterm and term infants there were considerable variations in the age at which each immunisation was given. Fewer of the preterm infants had their first three immunisations on time. The difference in timings between the two groups was statistically significant. Earlier immunisations were more often given on time than later ones. The greater the gestational age, the more likely that the infant would be immunised at the correct times. It is important to stress to parents the importance of immunisation for babies who are born prematurely or who have been unwell.

Failure to thrive remains a common problem accounting for a large number of referrals to paediatric clinics. Some children with failure to thrive undergo extensive investigations including a sweat test to exclude cystic fibrosis. Selecting a group of children who had a sweat test, we chose to compare weight centile data recorded at initial presentation with data collected at routine school-entry medical several years later. It was encouraging to see that most children improved their weight centile with time, regardless of whether a diagnosis had been reached.
