Morphologic discrimination among healthy subjects and patients with progressive and nonprogressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective and controlled comparative study. OBJECTIVES: To identify variables that would allow discrimination among patients with progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, patients with nonprogressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, and control subjects. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In a previous study, the correlation was demonstrated between morphologic somatotypes and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: One hundred forty-six subjects were evaluated anthropometrically and were classified according to their morphologic somatotype. Of these subjects, 52 were adolescent girls with progressive idiopathic scoliosis, whereas 32 girls had nonprogressive idiopathic scoliosis. The control group was composed of 62 healthy adolescent girls. Somatotype values for ectomorphism, mesomorphism, and endomorphism were obtained according to a technique based on Sheldon's method, and 77 anthropometric measurements of segments of the thorax, head, and limbs were taken. RESULTS: The discriminant analysis realized on a subset of 18 variables allowed the correct identification of each subject's group in 84% of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to differentiate healthy adolescent subjects, patients with nonprogressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, and patients with progressive idiopathic scoliosis by using anthropometric measurements and morphologic classification. These findings may be useful in the early detection of children at risk for progression of scoliosis and may allow earlier application of treatment methods without waiting for a significant increase in the curve.

[Possible relationship between idiopathic scoliosis and morphologic somatotypes in adolescent females].

This retrospective study was conducted to verify the possibility of a relationship between morphological somatotypes and Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). The sample was composed of 77 adolescent girls presenting Idiopathic Scoliosis. In every case, scoliosis was important enough to necessitate a corrective surgery. The control group (historical type) was taken from an anthropometric study done in 1990 [5]. Morphotypes were evaluated from medical slides with pre-established criteria based on Sheldon's technique [3, 4]. Three somatotype values were obtained: One for ectomorphism, a second for mesomorphism and a third for endomorphism. This classification system is calibrated in a way that the summation of these 3 values necessarily gives 7. AIS patients appear less mesomorphic with a mean value of 1,208 +/- 1.03 than the control group with a mean value of 1,923 +/- 0.89 (Student "t" test: 6,149, p < 0.0001). Based on these results, a relationship between morphological somatotypes and the presence of AIS appears possible. A more elaborate prospective study will be needed to support this hypothesis.

Occupational asthma in snow crab-processing workers.

The prevalence of occupational asthma was studied in two snow crab-processing industries in operation since 1980. Before the 1982 season, all except 10 of the 313 employees were investigated by a questionnaire, prick skin tests with common allergens, crab n and crab-boiling water extracts, and spirometry. The diagnosis was confirmed in 46 (15.6%) workers (including 33 of 64 subjects with a history highly suggestive of occupational asthma in the previous seasons) by (1) specific inhalation challenges in 33 subjects (one immediate, nine dual, and 23 late asthmatic responses) and/or (2) a combination of monitoring of peak expiratory flow rates (n = 12) and significant changes in bronchial responsiveness to histamine (n = 16) as well as in spirometry (n = 18) after reappearance of symptoms on return to work. Positive skin tests to crab (p less than 0.001) and, to a lesser degree, smoking history (p = 0.03) but not atopy (p greater than 0.05) were related to the presence of occupational asthma. A high prevalence of rhinoconjunctivitis (35 of 46) and urticaria (16 of 46) was also documented in the affected individuals.

[The concept of differential aging (its use in health study in the workplace).].

Differential aging means the difference between chronological and biological age ; this concept is one of the best general health level indicators for individuals and groups, being both a diagnostic and a research instrument for the study of environmental sources of health variations. In an industrial setting, our results indicate strong over-aging in the case of unskilled manual workers, which might be related to lack of interest in the mechanical, repetitive tasks at work and to possible alienation of this employee category.

[Normogram study of the health of male industrial workers in northern Switzerland. Part 3: present medical care - frequency].

A study has been conducted to obtain representative data on the health of industrial workers in northern Switzerland. 1260 men from 44 plants were covered. At the time of the study 21.3% were under treatment by a doctor. From all these patients 14.4% were suffering from heart diseases, 12.6% from articular rheumatism and muscle diseases, 10.3% from neurological and 9% from dermatological diseases. Of subjects aged 43--65, 1.7 times more were under treatment by a doctor than subjects aged 20--42.

[Normogram study: representative data on the state of health of male industrial workers in northern Switerland. III. Physiological and biochemical findings].

To obtain normative data on the health of men aged 20 to 65 years working in the industry of northern Switzerland, a representative study was conducted in 1260 men from 44 plants. The average pulse rate was 75/min and there was no age-related differences. The average blood pressure was 125/73 mm Hg in the 20-25 age group and 148/84 mmHg at age 60-65. An ergometric test (2 watt/kg/6 min) showed that forced vital capacity decreases significantly from 5561 +/- 782 ml in subjects aged 20-24 to 3809 +/- 757 ml in those aged 60-65. Cholesterol levels were 198 +/- 50 mg% (age 20-24), 240 +/- 42 mg% (age 50-54) and 235 +/- 47 mg% (age 60-65). Urine tests showed albumin in 15% and glucose in 4% of samples.

[Normogram study: representative data on the state of health of male industrial workers in northern Switzerland. 1. Report: anamnesis and health behavior].

To obtain representative data about the health of industrial workers in nothern Switzerland, 1260 men from 44 plants have been examined. At the time of our study, 21% were under treatemnt by a doctor and 52% had so been 1-3 times during the previous year. 44% hat at some time in the past been patients in a surgical department, 13% in a department for internal medicine and 29% in a department for special diseases. During the previous year 39% reported loss of working days through illness. In 13%, working days had been lost through accidents. 48% were smokers, 38% had never smoked, and 14% had stopped smoking. Alcohol was consumed daily by 37%, three times a week by 30% and once a week by 18%; 11% drank rarely and 4% never, 16% took medicines often, 40% rarely and 44% never. The results of the study are classified by 5-year-age groups and compared.

[Hyperoxemia in extracorporeal circulation].

The authors demonstrate the effects of hyperoxemia in dogs subjected to extracorporeal circulation. Arterial Po2 was maintained between 100 and 140 mm Hg in a control group and above 200 mm Hg in another group. There was no morbidity or mortality in these experiments. Postoperative functional status as well as hematological and biochemical data were similar in both groups. However, free plasma hemoglobin was 50% higher in animals subjected to hyperoxygenation. It is thus concluded that on the basis of these results hyperoxygenation has no beneficial effect on the animals submitted to total body bypass and moreover that arterial Po2 over 200 mm Hg increases hemolysis.

[Effects of the trip to work on health, especially on blood pressure].

The goal of this study is to demonstrate relationships between journey to work and health status. 546 employees of industrial plants in northeastern Switzerland have been examined. We have demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between the length of journey to work and arterial blood pressure. Furthermore some dependences on the kind of transport hard to explain are demonstrated, but most of them aren't statistically significant.
