Is the Prunella (Lamiaceae) hybrid zone structured by an environmental gradient? Evidence from a reciprocaltransplant experiment.

Hybrid zones may be structured by environmentally independent selection against intrinsically unfit hybrids (tension zone models), or by environmentally dependent fitness differences among parental species and hybrids (ecological selection-gradient models). A 30-m slope in a mountain grassland harbors a hybrid zone of the clonal perennials, Prunella grandiflora and P. vulgaris (Lamiaceae), with P. grandiflora in the upper, P. vulgaris in the lower, and both parental species and P. grandiflora × P. vulgaris Hybrids in a narrow middle part. We found gradients for soil depth and water content, and vegetation height and biomass along the slope. A reciprocal transplant experiment yielded crossing reaction norms for vegetative reproduction. Parental species were locally adapted to their home sites, while the three taxa did not differ in vegetative reproduction in the Hybrid transplant site. Local adaptation for vegetative reproduction of P. grandiflora was mediated through higher survival and that of P. vulgaris through higher ramet number, indicating adaptation of their clonal growth strategies (phalanx vs. guerrilla) to the different habitats. Hybrid performance was intermediate between that of the parental species in all three sites, although Hybrids flowered more often than the parental species in the Hybrid site. Our results support ecological selection-gradient rather than tension zone models.

[The long-term effects of noise on dentists].

On the basis of analyses of the main noise emitting equipment was carried out an audiometric test of dentists. The high frequencies of various equipment are reflected in a reduced high-frequency hearing. Significant differences became evident with increasing years of service, as well as in comparison to age adequate control groups. The high-frequency audiogram used in addition to the normal threshold audiogram is suitable to prove such occupational changes. The measured hearing loss remained without social importance in all cases.

[The diagnostic significance of auditory evoked brain stem potentials in multiple sclerosis].

30 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis were examined by BERA among other audiological tests. In 47% we stated significant pathological BERA-latencies, in 53% pathological interpeak-intervals. The most patients have symptoms of brainstem, but 3 cases spinal symptoms. There are no constant correlations to subjective hearing threshold measurements. According to literature BERA, especially the measurement of interpeak-intervals, increases diagnostic security of the diagnosis multiple sclerosis.

[Lymphatic node-metastasis of the neck in unknown primary tumour (author's transl)].

27 patients with the diagnosis "unknown primary tumour" and lymphatic node-metastasis of the neck were treated within 20 years. These are 11,7% of all neck dissections. In 18 patients the seat of the carcinoma could be found later, especially in the Glandula parotis, in the hypopharynx and in the ground of the tongue. To find the primary tumour the scintigraphy of salivary glands and of the Glandula thyroidea and a careful endoscopy have to be done. The best results of treatment are established after combined surgical-radiological therapy with neck dissection. These patients are free of recurrences on an average of 2,6 years.
