Distal splint bone fractures in the horse: an experimental and clinical study.

An experimental and clinical study to investigate the aetiology of distal splint bone fractures is described. In vitro, extension of the fetlock did not appear to alter the position of the distal ends of the splint bones, although tension in the interosseous tendons increased. Flexion of the fetlock resulted in slight outward displacement of the distal ends of the splint bones. It is suggested that concurrent desmitis of the suspensory ligament can cause movement of the ends of the splint bones thus predisposing to a fatigue fracture. In a clinical study of 87 horses, 114 splint bone fractures were identified. In at least 70 per cent of horses, suspensory desmitis was present. Follow up information was available in 24 horses in which more than 80 per cent of the fractures healed spontaneously. Non-union fractures were not painful and did not cause lameness.

Effect of inhaled nitric oxide on the hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstrictor response in anaesthetised calves.

The effect of inhaling nitric oxide in the hypoxic pulmonary vascular response was measured in five calves anaesthetised with a combination of guaiacol, ketamine and xylazine. Alveolar hypoxia was induced by means of the inhalation of a gas mixture with an inspiratory oxygen fraction of 14-18 per cent. This alveolar hypoxia resulted in a pronounced pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure in hypoxic animals: 30.2 mmHg). Inhalation of 20 and 40 ppm of nitric oxide significantly attenuated the hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension. The effect ceased once nitric oxide administration was stopped. A concentration of 40 ppm of nitric oxide fully abolished the hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure during inhalation of 40 ppm nitric oxide: 22.8 mmHg). Inhalation of nitric oxide had no effect on systemic arterial blood pressure nor on systemic vascular resistance. It was concluded that inhalation of 20 or 40 ppm of nitric oxide prevented a selective pulmonary vasoconstriction during alveolar hypoxia in calves, which may be helpful in the treatment of acute respiratory disorders in calves.

Carpal joint arthrodesis as a treatment for chronic septic carpitis in calves and cattle.

Chronic septic carpitis in 72 calves and adult cattle was treated by arthrodesis of the carpus (n = 24), proximal or distal carpal row resection with arthrodesis (n = 31), or resection of both the proximal and distal carpal bones and radio-metacarpal arthrodesis (n = 17). Painfree arthrodesis permitting full weight-bearing was obtained in 69% of the cases. Arthrodesis without resection of carpal bones was successful in 87% of the cases. With resection of one carpal row, 72% of the cases were treated successfully. Radio-metacarpal arthrodesis with removal of both carpal rows resulted in fusion in 35% of the animals.
