[Behavior of various enzymes and serum electrolytes in long distance runners during training. Effect of a bicarbonate-sulfate-calcium water of medium mineral content].

The above study was intended to assess the effect of a bicarbonate sulfate alkaline water of medium mineral contents in long-distance runners during training. Several parameters relating to water-electrolyte and lactate-pyruvate metabolism, and to the patterns of serum enzymes of variable cellular localization were determined. Altogether twelve indices were taken into account. No significant changes were observed fron the start to the end of mineral water treatment. This goes to show that training was well balanced and did not impair the athletes' biochemical homeostasis. At the end of the treatment period, non negligible fluctuations of CCK and LDH were observed. This finding is not devoid of interest and deserves further study.

Rapid and simple high-performance liquid chromatographic determination of tricyclic antidepressants for routine and emergency serum analysis.

An isocratic reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure is presented for the simultaneous detection of desipramine, nortriptyline, imipramine, amitriptyline and clomipramine in serum. Drugs are extracted after sample alkalinization and separated from each other on an octyl reversed-phase with n-butylamine as mobile phase modifier. Detection is achieved at 254 nm. The recovery of tricyclic antidepressants (92-110%) has good precision, with a relative standard deviation of less than 5%. Being rapid and simple, the method is suitable for the emergency clinical laboratory.

Penetration of cefonicid into serum, salpinges, cervix and vaginal tissue.

Cefonicid is a new cephalosporin that, given in adequate concentrations is able to kill some pathogens such as Gram-positive cocci and many Enterobacteriaceae. In this study we have evaluated 40 patients receiving 1 g of cefonicid i.m. at various times before abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. The results of the present study indicate that a single dose of 1 g of cefonicid given intramuscularly is useful as prophylaxis and treatment of gynecological infections.

[Perinatal listeriosis. A report of a case with a hydrocephalus outcome].

Perinatal listeriosis is a disease whose incidence has increased constantly in recent years. Like neonatal infection determined by B hemolyticus streptococcus, the disease appears in two forms: the first is the septicaemic form with early onset, the second form is meningoencephalitic with late onset. We describe a case of listeriosis with immediate onset in which, in spite of the prompt therapy and the normality of rachiocentesis, developed a purulent ventriculitis with outcome in hydrocephalus.

Combined Modality Therapy

[Formation and excretion of bile. An example of possible thermal "detoxification"].

The detoxifying activity of fraction III of the bile (anion choleresis) is stressed. The stimulation of bile formation by the drinking of mineral waters is apt to enhance this fraction indirectly. It is therefore thought that thermal therapy facilitates the secretory function of bile and the organic detoxification connected with it.

Introduction of the beta isozyme of protein kinase C accelerates induced differentiation of murine erythroleukemia cells.

Induction of differentiation in murine erythroleukemia cells (MELCs) involves a protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated step. Vincristine-resistant cells respond more rapidly to hybrid polar/apolar inducers than the parental cells. These vincristine-resistant MELCs contain elevated levels of the beta isozyme of PKC (PKC-beta). Exogenous homologous murine PKC-beta, incorporated into permeabilized MELCs, accelerates induced differentiation. Neither rat PKC-beta, nor mouse PKC-alpha, nor rat PKC-alpha, incorporated into permeabilized MELCs, is effective in altering the kinetics of induced differentiation. This provides direct evidence for a rate-limiting role for this PKC isozyme during N,N'-hexamethylenebisacetamide-mediated induced differentiation of a transformed cell.

Acetamides

[Thermal sulfur compounds and esthetic dermatology].

Sulfur compounds are involved in a variety of ways in cosmetics and topical surface treatments. The criterium to be kept in mind is the natural skin-friendliness of sulfur (Comel) and the tangible possibility to influence the morphology and function of the skin by sulfur compounds. Thermal sulfur resources--above all fanghi and baregines--appear to have the appropriate properties for use in aesthetic dermatology. Further basic and clinical studies are needed in order to find scientific support for the indications and uses that are at present contemplated with good reason.

[Influence of mineral waters on functional dyspepsia].

The author discusses morbid conditions of the upper digestive tract giving rise to dyspepsia, especially those involving gastric function. Several classifications are reported, as well as studies concerning gastric emptying. The effects of spa treatments with drinking of mineral waters is examined in relation to primary dysfunctions of the stomach and biliary passages.

Tolerance to and cross-tolerance among ethanol, pentobarbital and chlordiazepoxide.

The acute administration of ethanol, pentobarbital and chlordiazepoxide impaired, in a dose-dependent manner, the performance of rats on the moving-belt and two-way shuttle-box avoidance tests. Administration of these drugs for three weeks resulted in tolerance to their motor-impairing effects. Tolerance to ethanol or pentobarbital was characterized by a parallel shift of the dose-response curve to the right. Tolerance to chlordiazepoxide, however, was of greater extent and was accompanied by an apparent flattening of the dose-response curve. Symmetrical cross-tolerance developed between ethanol and pentobarbital. On the other hand, while chlordiazepoxide treatment conferred full cross-tolerance to ethanol and pentobarbital, only partial cross-tolerance to chlordiazepoxide was observed following treatment with ethanol or pentobarbital. These results suggest that at least part of the tolerance to chlordiazepoxide depends on changes in specific benzodiazepine receptors and is independent of the tolerance associated with non-specific changes in the cell membrane.

Polymyalgia rheumatica and systemic giant cell arteritis. Bioptic findings of the subclavian arteries in a case of aortic arch syndrome.

A 64 year old woman complained of aches and stiffness of the neck and the shoulders with fever and E.S.R. increase. A nonsteroid anti-inflammatory treatment was unsuccessful. A clinical examination revealed absence of both radial pulses and presence of murmurs at level of the carotids. The angiographic findings confirmed an aortic arch syndrome with severe stenosis of the subclavian and axillary arteries. The diagnostic approach, in spite of a negativity of the temporal artery biopsy, was for systemic giant cell arteries with general manifestations of polymyalgia rheumatica. The biopsies of both subclavian arteries, performed during a surgery revascularization, showed a typical giant cell arteries in acute stage. The histopathological pattern of extratemporal giant cell arteries obtained by means of a surgical biopsy is really uncommon, being the previous reports performed on necroscopic findings only. In addition this case confirms that polymyalgia rheumatica implies a systemic arteries even if the clinical and histopathological signs of temporal arteritis are lacking. Therefore the temporal artery should be only considered as a particular and inconstant localization of this vasculitis.
