This article reports on a first attempt to integrate advanced training programs for social workers in the field of psycho-social gerontology into university curricula. The report concentrates on experience and problems to transmit and translate gerontological research results for the use of practitioners. Especially effective proved the integration of social workers as "experts-in-practice" into open-curricular-learning and their participation in application oriented research.
Acne and acneform changes are the most frequent occupational diseases in certain industries. As a rule, an oil acne occurs rather seldom in the cordage industry. However, in the factory at Rijeka, 85% of the occupational dermatoses were oil acnes. Mineral oil used in the treatment of hemp was the main etiologic factor. In the ill female workers of that cordage factory, the microclimate, the needle shaped hemp dust, greasy skin, bad working conditions and had hygiene played an important part.
A system for the evaluation of therapeutical effects in rheumatic diseases is presented. This system permits a calculation of two indices: i.e. rheuma-number and "Masszahl" (= only measured values such as range of motion in degrees) which lend themselves to statistical treatment. The result of standardized physical joint examination of patients is recorded on two mark-pages, specially developed for documentation of joint status. The data recorded on the two-mark-pages are then entered into the computer by means of a mark-page-reader. On the basis of these data, the computer, upon the basis of a program specially developed for this purpose, automatically calculates the corresponding amount of negative-points, which parallels the severity of the joint changes, i.e. the rheuma-number ("Rheumazahl"). Separately listed at the end of the status-outprint is the "Masszahl", which is part of the rheuma-number and comprises the measured values (for example, the range of motion measured in degrees). The practicability of this system is demonstrated on the basis of the results of a double-blind-comparison of two antirheumatic-corticosteroid-combinations and an open study with immuno-suppressives in patinets with rheumatoid arthritis.
Family practice residency training in Venezuela is designed to prepare physicians to meet the health needs of the nation at a time of increasing societal concerns for the quality and cost of care. Since 1982, nine residency programs have been created throughout the country. Each two-year program is based in an ambulatory care setting. Entering physicians have completed an internship and have a minimum of two years practice experience. Graduates have been prepared to continue a socially active role to promote the new specialty. Training emphasizes community aspects of clinical practice, similar to the hopes of community-oriented primary care in the United States. Additional emphases include exposure to clinicians from other specialties, family aspects of patient care, working with a health care team, completion of a research project, and structured courses of theory in areas such as public health, behavioral medicine, and research methodology. Although hampered by economic constraints, the movement's intensely committed leaders have successfully captured political and public support.
