The temperature dependences of some types of gaseous ionic reactions of astrochemical interest.

The rate constants of ion-molecule reactions which are of potential significance in astrochemical systems are found to exhibit significant, and in many cases, negative temperature dependences. The rate constants of fast ion-polar molecule reactions (e.g., XH+ + B leads to BH+ + X) may increase by a factor of 5-10 between 1000 and 10D. Slow reactions that proceed via reaction complexes (e.g., H- transfer and association reactions) often exhibit temperature dependences of the form k = AT-n, n = 1-5. Both transition state theory considerations and the coupled-oscillator RRK-type model are seen to be able to account qualitatively for the behavior of slow ion-molecule reactions.

A comparative study of cytokinesins I and II and zeatin riboside: a reply to Carlos Miller.

Two cell-division-promoting factors, which have partition coefficients of 1.9 and 2.75 determined by 500-tube countercurrent distribution in a butanolwater system, have been repeatedly isolated in this laboratory from crown gall tumor tissues of Vinca rosea L. These substances have been given the trivial names cytokinesin I and cytokinesin II, respectively. Chemical and mass spectrometric analyses suggest that both cytokinesins are substituted hypoxanthines and are thus very different compounds from the 6-substituted adenyl cytokinins. Carlos Miller, using a very different and far more drastic isolation procedure, obtained one main cell-division-promoting factor from these same tumor tissues, which he identified as ribosyl-trans-zeatin. On the basis of this finding, and without an attempt to repeat our studies, questions have been raised by Miller concerning the existence of the cytokinesins as biologically active substances. We have, therefore, compared some pertinent physical, chemical, and biological properties of the cytokinesins with those of zeatin riboside, have demonstrated that these three substances can be cleanly separated from one another by a number of different methods and that each behaves as a pure substance in the several systems, and, finally, we have shown that the cytokinesins are not contaminated with ribosyl-trans-zeatin and thus do not owe their biological activity to such a contaminant.

Quantification of the sulfates of 16 alpha-hydroxy androgens that are possible precursors of estriol-3-sulfate in human breast cyst fluid.

The concentration of 16 alpha-hydroxydehydroepiandrosterone-3-sulfate (16 alpha-OHDHAS) was determined in 29 samples of human breast cyst fluid (BCF) and in 15 of these, androst-5-ene-3 beta,16 alpha,17 beta-triol-3-sulfate (A-TriolS) was also assayed. The median value of both was about 100 ng/mL and the ranges were from 1.4 to about 1800 ng/mL. There was a significant association in the values for the two sulfates (p less than 0.05). These concentrations are consistent with a role for 16 alpha-hydroxy androgens as possible precursors for estriol-3-sulfate. The latter is highly elevated relative to other body fluids in BCF. The androgens also correlated directly with the concentrations of K+, an indicator of apocrine proliferation of breast cysts.
