Therapeutic values of different routes of administration of vitamin A with ferrous sulfate in treating deferoxamin-induced iron-deficiency anemia.

About half the pregnant women in developing countries suffer from iron-deficiency anemia. The treatment of choice for these patients includes iron compounds such as ferrous sulfate. It was recently shown that a concomitant administration of vitamin A with ferrous sulfate increases iron-induced hematopoietic effect. In the current study, the efficacy of various routes of administration of vitamin A with ferrous sulfate in deferoxamin-treated anemic rats were compared. The work reveals no difference among various routes of administration, including several alternates of oral and intramuscular injection of vitamin A and ferrous sulfate for 28 d. It was therefore concluded that the therapeutic effect of vitamin A in iron-deficiency anemia is probably not via its influence on iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.

A simple method for the derivation of the international normalized ratio for the reporting of prothrombin time results.

In order to harmonize the prothrombin time (PT) reporting systems, the World Health Organization, in collaboration with the International Committee on Thrombosis and Hemostasis, and the International Council on the Standardization in Hematology proposed a reporting system, the so-called international normalized ratio (INR). As the calculation of the INR depends on mathematical formula requiring a special calculator or mathematic tables, its derivation is associated with some difficulties and errors. In this article a nomogram is presented, by which derivation of the INR from different PT reporting methods can be easily done within a few seconds.

Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in a primary health care centre in Fars Province, Islamic Republic of Iran.

This study determined the prevalence of atrial fibrillation at a primary health care centre in Fars province of the Islamic Republic of Iran. All ambulatory people aged > or = 50 years visiting the centre between April and October 2001 were screened for atrial fibrillation using a standard 12-lead ECG. The mean +/- SD age of participants was 64.0 +/- 8.9 years. Of 463 participants aged 50-79 years, 13 (2.8%) had atrial fibrillation (median age 74 years), significantly more women (10/230) than men (3/233). Unlike previous studies in industrialized countries, the prevalence tripled with each decade of life and increased significantly from 0.6% in the 50-59 years to 6.4% in the 70-79 years age group. With increasing longevity in some developing countries, atrial fibrillation and consequently stroke may become major health problems.

Isolated lingual leishmaniasis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in Fars Province, southern Iran. However, mucosal leishmaniasis is extremely uncommon. Herein, we report a patient with isolated lingual leishmaniasis in an immunocompetent 40-year-old man. The lesion was totally excised. The patient was cured completely and is doing well after four years of follow-up, with no medical treatment.

Monte Carlo simulation on the effect of different approaches to thalassaemia on gene frequency.

We used computer simulation to determine variation in gene, heterozygous and homozygous frequencies induced by 4 different approaches to thalassaemia. These were: supportive therapy only; treat homozygous patients with a hypothetical modality phenotypically only; abort all homozygous fetuses; and prevent marriage between gene carriers. Gene frequency becomes constant with the second or the fourth strategy, and falls over time with the first or the third strategy. Heterozygous frequency varies in parallel with gene frequency. Using the first strategy, homozygous frequency falls over time; with the second strategy it becomes constant; and with the third and fourth strategies it falls to zero after the first generation. No matter which strategy is used, the population gene frequency, in the worst case, will remain constant over time.
