[Diagnostic ability of stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT) in pre-perimetric glaucoma diagnosis].

OBJECTIVE: To compare retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) measurements performed with Stratus OCT 3000 in normal, ocular hypertensive, pre-perimetric and glaucomatous eyes. METHODS: 98 normal subjects, 156 ocular hypertensives with short-wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP), 21 ocular hypertensives with altered SWAP (pre-perimetric glaucoma) and 66 glaucomatous eyes were included in the study. Diagnostic groups were classified based on intraocular pressure, optic nerve head appearance, achromatic automatic perimetry and SWAP. RNFL parameters were obtained using a Stratus OCT 3000 (Humphrey Zeiss instruments). RNFL measurements were compared among the groups. RESULTS: RNFL average thickness, superior, inferior and nasal quadrant thickness, and each 12 clock-hour positions except for H9, H10 and H11 showed significant differences between glaucomatous and pre-perimetric glaucoma eyes. RNFL average thickness, inferior quadrant and H10 clock-hour position showed significant differences between normal and ocular hypertensive subjects. Pre-perimetric glaucomas and ocular hypertensives showed differences in H11 clock-hour position exclusively. CONCLUSION: RNFL measurements performed using Stratus OCT showed differences between the study groups. OCT may be as useful as SWAP in early glaucoma diagnosis.

[Benefit of scanning laser ophthalmoscopy for detecting retinal nerve fiber layer defects in patients with intraocular hypertension].

PURPOSE: To compare the ability to identify RNFL alterations between standard images and SLO images in a group of patients suffering from ocular hypertension. METHODS: We evaluated RNFL in sixty patients with ocular hypertension and with normal perimetry, by using standard photography and SLO. Two different independent observers evaluated the images on two different ocassions. RESULTS: We studied 118 eyes, twelve eyes were rejected because of the low quality of the images. Four cases of diffuse atrophy and five patients with wedge shaped defects were observed using both methods. Statistical analysis showed no differences between both exploration techniques or between observers. CONCLUSIONS: RNFL study with SLO seems to be at least as reliable as standard photography as a method to evaluate RNFL defects. SLO has also proved to be much easier, and faster than traditional methods.

Pharmacokinetics and ocular penetration of grepafloxacin in albino and pigmented rabbits.

The pharmacokinetics of grepafloxacin were determined in albino and pigmented rabbits following a single 10 mg/kg intravenous administration. The penetration of grepafloxacin into various ocular tissues was also determined after continuous intravenous infusion in both types of animal. Grepafloxacin showed a bicompartmental model of distribution in both pigmented and albino rabbits with significant differences in the pharmacokinetics between the two types of animal. After continuous intravenous infusion, significantly greater penetration of grepafloxacin was found in the iris, cornea and chorioretina of pigmented rabbits compared with albino rabbits.

[Ocular cyanoacrylate injury].

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE/MATERIAL AND METHOD: Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive is indicated when a small corneal perforation is present. We report the case of a 23 year-old man who was attacked being thrown cyanoacrylate to both of his eyes. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Wound healing has been laborious, however performed with low morbidity. This case is reported for being a bilateral injury and after finding no precedented cases in the literature.

[A case of punctate inner choroidopathy: differential diagnosis].

CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 27-year old woman suffering from a chorioretinal inflammatory disease that was diagnosed as punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) after a complete ophthalmic evaluation. DISCUSSION: PIC must be taken into consideration when evaluating a patient with a white dot syndrome.

Evaluation of the nerve fiber layer and peripapillary atrophy in ocular hypertension.

A study has been performed with the Canon retinographic equipment on 549 eyes belonging to 3 different groups: normal population, ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The study included the evaluation of the optic disk with special attention to the presence of choroidal peripapillary atrophy, and the distribution and defects in the RNFL. A highly significant association was observed between the presence of peripapillary atrophy and the presence of defects in the RNFL, as well as between the intensity of choroidal atrophy and defects in the RNFL. This association was statistically significant in the population of ocular hypertensives (P = 0.0360) but not in the population of eyes considered normal.

[Terrien's disease].

A clinical review of the Terrien's corneal disease, based on the observation of five atypical clinical cases, was conducted in relation to the age which the clinical picture appeared, or to its association with other ocular pathology such as keratoconus, cataract, and conjunctivolimbic epidermoid carcinoma. The technique for surgical treatment of advanced peripheral corneal ectasis employing a semilunar lamellar keratoplasty is described. This was performed on one patient, with good results.
