[Organ donors: survey of 1000 persons].

According to the french law, organs may be removed from all persons who have not, prior to their death, notified their opposition. The survey shows that 56% had not heard of the law, although 77% were willing to donate. There were marked differences in the answers of the different social groups, the lower groups being less informed and more reserved towards the idea of organ donation. The women asked were less willing than the men to donate their own organs or those of their families, and yet they said they had given more thought to this problem. Finally, although this survey was carried out in an area where there been widespread information on the subject, 94% considered that the public were not sufficiently informed. It is true that, of the 20% against donation, only 1 in 10 knew the practical possibilities for refusal. Could we not envisage a system, as exists in other countries, whereby the acceptance or refusal is mentioned on the identity card? We know in advance that 77% would be willing to donate.

Gastric lipomas--an update of clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Although gastric lipomas, an extremely rare tumor, were once found mostly during autopsy studies and laparotomy for upper intestinal hemorrhages and obstruction, we are now able to diagnose these masses with CT scanners and gastrointestinal endoscopy. Surgery is now necessary only under certain circumstances. We present two cases of gastric lipomas with different clinical presentations, both diagnosed preoperatively.

Telangiectasias of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Report of six cases and review.

Telangiectasias of the upper gastrointestinal tract are probably being recognized more frequently now simply because of current high awareness of their existence. In six patients reported here, the condition was recognized in three because of recurrent upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage and in three during endoscopic evaluation for epigastric pain. Two of the six patients shared the features of gastric and/or duodenal telangiectasia, advanced age, and aortic valve disease. Two patients were treated with endoscopic coagulation, with no success in one. Laser, when available, may prove to be the most effective therapeutic tool for this entity.

The H-2Kk antigen: isolation using monoclonal immunoadsorbent chromatography and sequence analysis without radioisotopes.

Monoclonal immunoadsorbent chromatography has been used to isolate milligram quantities of detergent-solubilized H-2Kk antigen. Using the procedure described in this paper 10(12) cells may be processed yielding 10 mg of homogenous H-2Kk which represents 70% of the allotypic serological activity present in the original homogenate. NH2-Terminal sequence data of the first 30 residues of the H-2Kk heavy chain are presented. The cell line selected as the source of antigen and the criteria of purity of the antigen have been found to be critical as proteins of molecular weight 42,000 and 12,000 were copurified with H-2Kk from the BW5147 cell line. The additional components were observed in gradient gel electrophoresis or two-dimensional electrophoresis, but not in conventional Laemmli gel electrophoresis.

The liver in secondary syphilis.

Liver involvement is uncommon in secondary syphilis and may resemble liver disease from alcoholism or acute viral hepatitis. Liver biopsy usually indicates nonspecific reactive hepatitis with or without cholestasis. Jaundice may sometimes be absent although liver damage is present. The liver abnormalities can be resolved with antibiotic therapy, but penicillin therapy may cause Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Syphilitic hepatitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of obscure liver disease.
