Histiocyte X positivity for nonspecific esterase.

The cell membrane and X bodies of histiocytes X from two cases of eosinophilic granuloma were stained by nonspecific esterase. The results show that histiocytes X possess a cell membrane exoenzyme similar to that of other histiocytes, such as alveolar macrophages, but the role of the X body as related to enzyme activity remains an unknown.

Cell Membrane

Human alveolar macrophages spontaneous reduction of BSPT salt.

Alveolar macrophages of non smoking and smoking human adults reduce BSPT salt spontaneously. The staining obtained is located on three cell membrane systems: the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus and the nuclear envelope. Methylene blue MB inhibits BSPT reduction. The smokers alvelolar macrophages have less positivity than those of the non smokers. The endogenous cell substrate revealed in this work is the initial common pathway of two different oxidative chains bounded to the microsome. One acts with cytochrome P 450 for chemical detoxification by hydroxylation, the other one acts with cytochrome B5 for lipid oxidation or peroxidation and both may be connected with the cell bactericidal system.

Benzothiazoles

Study of immunoglobulins in pleura and pleural effusions.

The protein concentration of 35 pleural effusions was compared with that in the serum. The ratio of the pleural and serum concentration of albumin, IgG, IgA, and IgM is always below unity and appears to have no diagnostic value. However, the ratio of the concentration of these proteins was inversely related to their molecular weight. The underlying mechanism in malignant and inflammatory effusions appear similar and is in keeping with a diffusion process. Immunofluorescent staining of the pleura suggests the intercellular passage of the proteins through the mesothelial barrier.

Fluorescent Antibody Technique

The location of non-specific esterase in human lung macrophages. An ultrastructural study.

The non-specific carboxyl (serine) esterase of the human pulmonary alveolar macrophage was localized ultrastructurally using alpha-naphthyl acetate and hexazotized pararosanilin. The reaction product principally outlined the outer side of the plasma membrane. Consequently, this esterase is an ectoenzyme which may function as mediator of cell response to injurious agents from the outside.

[Polar acid phosphatase as T lymphoma marker (author's transl)].

The comparative morphological and histochemical studies of human thymic lymphocytes and 2 T--cell lymphomas allow the authors to emphasize the diagnostic value of a polar cytoplasmic acid phosphatase activity. This simple cytochemical method can provide permanent documentation easily stored and counted. It provides additional arguments to identify the stem cell of some human lymphomas.

Acid Phosphatase

[Adenomegalic cytophagic sinusal histiocytosis. Morphological and immunologic study of a case].

The case of a 14-year-old boy of North-African origin, presenting a phagocytic sinus histiocytosis is reported. The main features of this now classical disease are illustrated: its localization to the neck, its chronicity, the fact that it is well tolerated, the pseudotumoral appearance of the adenomegaly as well as the intensive phagocytic (essentially lymphocytophagic) activity of the sinus macrophages. The bringing to light in a picture of hyperimmunity of an elevated percentage of antibodies against the measles and EB viruses, associated with a temporary depression of the cellular immunity, suggest that this lymphophagocytosis could be controlled and facilitated by preferential opsonization of lymphoid cells carrying on their membrane the antigen of the virus or viruses initially responsible.

Adolescent

[Orthopedic problems in fibrous dysplasia in infant's bones. A report on 23 cases (author's transl)].

The authors report on 23 cases of fibrons in infants who had been treated surgically, and review the therapeutic problem which arise from this particular type of bone fragility. When located in the diaphysis they had been treated by screw fixation, isolated grafts being constantly unsuccessful. Various procedures had been used in 9 cases with localization in the proximal end of the femur, and they are reviewed critically.

Plasma protein immunocytochemistry and polysaccharide cytochemistry at the surface of alveolar and endothelial cells in the rat lung.

Ultrastructural immunocytochemistry of plasma proteins and cytochemistry of polysaccharides with ruthenium red and concanavalin A were combined with different types of fixation with or without prior vascular or airway washing, to study the surface of capillary endothelial and alveolar epithelial cells of the blood-air barrier in the rat lung. The endothelial and epithelial cell surface layers were found to have two components: a moveable part belonging to the cellular microenvironement made of plasma proteins and a deeper glucidic or anionic fixed part bound to the plasma membranes (cell coat).

[Cholesterol pneumonia in a child (author's transl)].

The case presented is that of a pneumonia due to cholesterol in a young girl of 13 years old. The clinical picture was that of severe progressive pulmonary fibrosis. On histology, a foreign body reaction around cholesterol crystals was found. The history enabled confirmation of the endogenous origin of this fatty infiltration.

[Renal cystadenoma in children. Apropos of 5 cases].

The multilocular renal cystadenoma is a benign, rather uncommon tumor occurring in childhood (one case for 40 Wilms tumors). The clinical pathological study of five cases and the review of cases published in the literature show that this tumor, like all cystadenomata, is constituted by isolated cysts lined with cubic epithelium and inserted into each other. These cysts are included into mature mesenchymatous tissue. The renal cystadenoma appears as a large, regular, spheric mass, sharply demarcated from the pelvic cavities and renal parenchyma. Its volume is the main clinical sign. Occasionally, angiographic and echographic investigations may provide additional useful data. In some cases, the renal cystadenoma may be difficult to distinguish from a well differenciated cystic nephroblastoma. The differential features are emphasized and discussed. The renal cystadenoma must be regarded as a hamartoma developed from some metanephrogenic blastematous areas excluded from the normal embryogenetic process. The term of renal cystadenoma emphasizes the neoplastic nature and the macroscopic appearance of this tumor and must be preferred to designate this lesion.

[Mathematical study of size distribution of alveolar mononuclear cells (CMA) in man].

The mathematical study using the Wicksell transformation of the size distribution of the mononuclear alveolar cells has shown two different populations among the alveolar macrophages obtained from 4 adult men. These two types of cells could be also found out and described by electron microscopy. The large cells (14 microns in diameter) looked like the "alveolar macrophage ", with many phagolysosomes. The small cells (7 microns in diameter), less numerous (1/3 of the whole population) resembled monocytes. These data in man are compared to those found in rabbits and the role ot two kinds of cells is discussed.

Nucleolar organizer regions in congenital mesoblastic nephroma.

A review of 78 renal tumors in patients under 6 months of age revealed 35 congenital mesoblastic nephromas (CMNs). Based on cellular criteria, 14 were classified as classical, 4 as partly cellular, and 17 as cellular CMN. The mean ages were 24, 11, and 70 days, respectively. There were 13 intrarenal tumors (stage I) but 9 classical, 3 partly cellular, and 5 cellular CMNs extended to the perirenal fat (stage II) and 5 cellular tumors ruptured (stage III). In order to assess cellular proliferative activity, silver staining of nucleolar organizer region (Ag-NOR) proteins was performed on 19 CMNs. The number of Ag-NOR dots per cell was significantly lower in classical and partly cellular CMN than in cellular CMN, whatever the stage (P < .01). Within the cellular CMNs, the mean number of Ag-NOR dots was statistically higher in the single case that recurred with fatal outcome (P < .02). Counting of Ag-NOR dots appears to be a reproducible method for evaluating the biologic potential of CMNs. The number of Ag-NOR dots, DNA content measurements, the histological subclassification, and the presence or absence of tumor at the surgical margins may be useful features in selecting those patients who will benefit from further treatment after nephrectomy.
