[Protection on experimental sinus node dysfunction in rabbits with ginsenosides].

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of ginsenosides from stems and leaves (GSL) on the sinus node dysfunction (SND) by observing the changes of the electrophysiological parameters of sinus node in limited period. Anesthetized rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups. In the acute experiment, GSL, 50 mg/kg, iv, was given to the GSL group (G), n = 12. Normal saline (NS), the same volume, to the control group (C), n = 12. After GSL was administered 30-50 mg/kg.d for 14 days, iv, another data were obtained from chronic experimental group (CE), n = 15. The results show that the parameters, spontaneous cycle length (SCL), maximal sinus node recovery time (SNRTmax), corrected sinus node recovery time (CSNRT) were shorter in G group and CE group than C group respectively (P less than 0.05, P less than 0.01). It was suggested that GSL exerted protective effects on the experimental sinus node dysfunction.

Ultrastructural binding site of pemphigus foliaceus autoantibodies: comparison with pemphigus vulgaris.

We studied in vivo binding sites of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) autoantibodies by immuno-gold labelling technique, and compared them with those of pemphigus vulgaris (PV). In early acantholytic lesions of PF, the bound antibodies indicated by 5 nm protein A-colloidal gold particles were observed on the surface of keratinocytes, with particular affinity for desmosomes and separated attachment plaques. Nondesmosomal cell surfaces were sparsely labeled with the gold particles. A similar binding pattern was seen in the epidermal sheets obtained from a PV patient utilizing the Nikolsky phenomenon. These findings indicate that both PF and PV antigen-antibody complexes are densely located on the desmosomal areas in early pemphigus lesions, suggesting the pathogenic importance of functional impairment of desmosomes by the autoantibodies.

Tobacco smoking and its effect on health in China.

Production and sales of manufactured cigarettes are increasing in China; furthermore, the proportion of filtered cigarettes is still low, and the tar yield thus remains high. The prevalence of smoking in the general population aged 20 and over is estimated to be 68.9% of men and 8.3% of women. Case-control studies carried out in major cities in China all showed a close relationship between lung cancer incidence and smoking. In Shanghai, the population attributable risks for lung cancer due to smoking were 0.69 in men and 0.24 in women. A limited number of case-control studies indicate that the incidences of cancers of the bladder, oesophagus and pancreas are also associated with smoking. Some studies on coronary heart disease reveal unequivocally a significant risk for this disease associated with smoking. Cancer, chronic obstructive lung diseases and coronary heart disease are now important causes of death in some large cities in China. More comprehensive investigations are needed in order to evaluate thoroughly the effect of smoking on health in China.

C6 reference typing report.

Various C6 protein allotypes were examined using polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing followed by immunoblotting or hemolytic overlay. For several 'difficult' allotypes, neuraminidase treatment of samples and long-distance isoelectric focusing gels were applied. Nineteen different allotypes were distinguished besides the two common allotypes C6 A and C6 B. They were designated basically according to the previous statement on C6 nomenclature [Mauff et al., 1980].
