Mobile patient simulator for resuscitation training with automatic external defibrillators.

Resuscitation training has to be performed under most realistic conditions. This includes both usual CPR measures (breathing and chest compressions) and advanced measures, e.g. the usage of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Almost all currently available simulators for ECG signals used in such trainings have a rather limited variety of available ECG signals. The trainer also has to change between different rhythms manually, resulting in a less realistic training environment. The development will result in mobile ECG simulator which can automatically react to events in the resuscitation process according to pre-programmed scenarios. It also has potential to simulate other physiological parameters like thorax impedance in the future.

[Development of laryngoscopy].

The development of laryngoscopy is described and the inventions of Kirstein, Killian, Seiffert, Kleinsasser and Weerda are mentioned. The development of microlaryngeal surgery and the anaesthesic techniques are also described.

["Current city district-oriented counseling of the elderly"--forms of approach and intervention patterns].

The Federal Ministry for Youth, Family, Women and Health in the Federal Republic of Germany supported a research project on counselling processes with the elderly. The overruling aim is to enable them to live at home as long as possible. A model of preventative intervention was developed and tested by a group of gerontologists and social workers in Kassel. Every fifth inhabitant aged 60 and over in a working class district of Kassel was interviewed (n = 106) with respect to his/her living conditions and need for care. As a second step, all aged persons at risk (i.e. with low income, in social isolation, with health handicaps - as well as those of a very old age) were selected (n = 53). Two social workers contacted them at home and attempted to build up a relation of confidence with a view to active counselling measures. This paper reports some important statistical results and specifies the concepts of counselling procedures developed. They are basically biographically and help oriented, encompassing intervention in acute situations of need as well as counselling in the more restricted, traditional sense of the term.

[Education of the aged in a residential setting--motivation for participation of "educational novices" within the scope of a "bring" structure].

Every inhabitant aged 60 years and over in a working class district in Kassel (N = 568) was visited and invited to discussion groups (topics were "growing old", "health", "care" and others) and to excursion activities. 10% of the people were interested; 7% actually took part. In comparison with a control group of participants from other districts, it was shown that it is possible to mobilize some of those people who have had low-level schooling and only a little experience of further education.

[Group specific improvements in activities of daily living in elderly stroke patients in the rehabilitation phase. A report from the study, "Rehabilitation in geriatrics--analysis and evaluation of rehabilitation procedures in over-60 stroke patients with reference to its epidemiologic aspects")].

Significant as well as non-significant but still distinct improvements in the average functional status of Activities of Daily Living (ADL), according to the Barthel Index and Rüstigkeitsskala as shown by the total patient group of two rehabilitation clinics are presented. The initial status and the time elapsed between stroke and rehabilitation are of great importance for the changes which can be attained. Patient groups which differ in factors such as age, sex, and family status also show clear differences in the average improvement of their functional status.

Activities of Daily Living↗

[Leisure interest activities within the context of mobility environments].

Selected activities of daily living are used to describe the micro-area (dwelling), mezzo-area (quarter) and exo-area (outside the quarter). In a survey of 115 elderly people, the five-year-changes from 1985/86 to 1990/91 in their areas of mobility in a working class district are documented. Special interest is given to the question, if people are making use of their areas by performing leisure activities. Social support is decisive for the access of areas which are limited by a person's physical status.

[Social work and social gerontology: gerontologic graduate and continuing education for social workers/social pedagogues ].

In their traditional fields, social workers increasingly have to deal with elderly people. Social work is implemented also in special facilities and services for old persons. In the basic education there is still no guarantee of a basic knowledge in social gerontology. This ist why further education programs are necessary. In a postgraduate curriculum the social work experience should be combined with the theoretical basis of social gerontology.
