[Hormone analyses and ultrasound examinations in high-risk early weeks of pregnancy (author's transl)].

The serum concentrations of HCG, HPL, progesterone and oestriol and ultrasonic findings were compared with one another in 42 women with normal pregnancy course, 51 women with haemorrhages and abortion and 27 women with haemorrhages and delivery on time. Correct diagnosis was most frequently possible with the help of ultrasound examination. However, it was possible to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis before the twelfth week of pregnancy by means of hormone analysis. If the hormone concentrations were normal, whereas ultrasound findings were either negative or not clear, intact pregnancy could be assumed. HCG and progesterone determination possessed the advantage of being reliably measurable even before cessation of menstrual bleeding. From the eighth to ninth weeks of pregnancy, determinations of HPL were also suitable for assessing endocrinal functions. After the twelfth week of pregnancy, the pregnancy conditions could be judged most safely by the ultrasound method.

[The bacterial contamination of epidural catheters with areobe and anaerobe germs in obstetrics (author's transl)].

Following anaesthesia the tips of 105 epidural catheters were investigated for aerobe and anaerobe bacteria. In one case aerobe germs (staphycoccus epidermidis) and in three cases anaerobe germs (propioni-bacteria were isolated. In two further cases aerobic growth was suspected but not confirmed in sub-cultures. The contamination rate was therefore 0.9% aerobe and 4.8% by anaerobe bacteria. Even in the face of a clinically uncomplicated course the presence of bacteria on the catheter tip is considered to be a potential risk for infection. As a preventive measure the skin disinfection procedure was changed and the disinfectant is left for sic minutes instead of three minutes.

Anesthesia, Epidural

Influence of sterilization and temperature changes on the in vitro characteristics of the pH electrode.

1. When chemical sterilization (with Korsolin, Cidex) is performed, a minimal duration of sterilization of 3 h is required for asepsis. 2. Duration of Korsolin sterilization up to 3 h does not influence the in vitro characteristics of the pH-electrode. 3. Sterilization with formaldehyde (24 h, 40 degrees C) is safe, but needs another 24 h restabilization time of the electrode. 4. The temperature dependence of the pH-electrode is minimal. With increasing temperature a slight decrease of pH measurement can be found (-0.02 pH units from 20--40 degrees C).

In vivo performance of the pH tissue electrode during acute acid-base changes in the dog.

The ROCHE tissue pH-electrode was tested in acute animal experiments under various metabolic conditions. In anesthetized dogs an electrode was placed in the subcutaneous tissue of the scalp, neck, and axilla. Simultaneous with the continuous measurement of tissue pH, the overall acid-base balance of the animal was measured discontinuously at 5-min intervals by means of indwelling arterial and venous catheters. Various forms of acidosis and hypoxia were produced in the experimental animal and the sensitivity of the electrodes in relation to their site was tested. A high correlation between the continuously measured tissue pH values and the corresponding arterial and venous actual blood pH values were found in the physiologic pH range. With acute changes of acid-base balance no correlation could be found in the acidotic range.
