A theoretic perspective on postcode stress experienced by critical care nurses.

Death and dying are among the factors that produce stress in critical care nurses. Resuscitation attempts, often associated with dearth and dying in critical care areas, also predispose to stress. However, a dearth of information exists in the literature concerning the psychologic impact of resuscitation on critical care nurses. To promote scholarly thought and dialogue, role theory is applied as a framework to comprehend stress in relation to resuscitation attempts. Information from published literature, the theoretic framework, and the authors' clinical experiences and observations are synthesized to provide suggested guidelines for postcode conferences to reduce critical care nurses' stress in the postresuscitation period.

A practical approach to content validation.

Often researchers are unable to find instruments to estimate variables they want to investigate. Once the variable of interest has been defined and operationalized, demonstrating content validity is the next step in the instrument development process. It requires that experts confirm that the operational definitions created are congruent with the universe of the theoretical definition of the concept. Grounded in appropriate standards and psychometric theory, the process of content validation is explored. Helpful suggestions are provided for the development of a form, the selection of experts, and the collection and analysis of data. The guidelines and examples presented offer a set of blueprints to assist the nurse researcher with a practical approach to the content validation process.

Collaborative nursing research between novices: productivity through partnership.

After graduation from a doctoral program, the novice requires continued development of research skills. Although a mentor may prove beneficial, not all neophyte researchers will be employed at institutions with seasoned nurse researchers. In this situation, the development of a peer association may promote career development and success. Based on the authors' personal experience, this article discusses a collaborative effort between novice researchers that led to development of research skills and improved scholarly productivity.
