Lipid metabolism in young males with hypotestosteronaemia and oligospermia prior to, during, and after treatment.

Relationships between plasma testosterone levels and selected parameters of lipid metabolism were studied in a group of young sterile males prior to, during, and after hormone therapy. Initial hypertriacylglycerolaemia and decreased concentrations of HDL cholesterol returned to normal values after 30 days of methyltestosterone administration. LDL cholesterol concentrations decreased significantly as did plasma apolipoprotein B levels. These changes persisted also one month after cessation of treatment. The results suggest that restoration of initially decreased testosterone levels in the studied group of sterile males is associated with the restoration of the lipid profile.

The influence of various aetiopathogenetic factors on testicular function.

Three hundred and seventy-one patients with azoospermia were examined by means of testicular biopsy. The patients were assigned to seven histological groups according to the degree of damage found in their germinative epithelium. The degree of damage to the germinative epithelium was correlated with the aetiopathogenetic factors.

On the psychopathology of patients with disorders in the descent of the testis.

The authors deal with disorders in the descent of the testis and analyse the causes and manifestations from the point of view of fertility and indications to medical treatment or early surgery. Thirty-nine patients were examined and diagnosed as unilateral or bilateral cryptorchism and retention of the testis. The spermatogenetic functions in individual diagnosis and type of operation are described. They wish to ascertain a mutual connection between sexual function and neurotic symptoms in operated patients with regard to the 3 diagnostic groups.

Congenital anomalies of the seminal ducts.

The frequency of individual congenital anomalies of the deferens, the seminal vesicles, the ejaculatory ducts and the utricle in 158 patients treated for sterility was determined by the method of deferentovesiculography by punction. Congenital anomalies were found in 14 patients (8.8%). Anomalies of rare occurrence are demonstrated in detail. The relation of such anomalies to sterility of patients is described.

Psychologic follow-up of personality factors in the chromosomal anomaly of Klinefelter's syndrome.

The authors deal with the psychopathology of the genetic-andrologic disorder of Klinefelter's syndrome. The problem is analysed from the point of view of mental level, personal characteristics, sexual life and tendency to psychical maladaptation in this disorder. In the theoretical part the results of researches of other authors are summarized. In the research the given hypotheses are verified in nine sample cases of the 47 XXY syndrome and the sample is characterized. The total results enable to recognize several psychologic correlations of the mentioned syndrome, and the complete clinical picture of the disease.

Treatment of testicular hypofunction with gonadotrophic hormones.

The paper reports on the response to gonadotrophic hormone treatment in cases of male infertility. The report includes 119 cases treated between 1971 and 1975. The evaluation of the results of gonadotrophic hormone treatment led to the following conclusions. Treatment with Praedyn has been relatively successful and the rate of success was directly dependent on the number of applied ampoules. Pergonal 500 brought a considerable improvement in all the treated patients. A meaningful comparison of the effect of Praedyn and Pergonal 500, respectively, was not possible because of the relatively small number of patients treated with Pergonal. Treatment with gonadotrophic hormones, especially Pergonal 500, seems to be indicated in cases of oligoasthenospermia, hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (or secondary hypogonadism) and at least a short-dated correction of the spermiogram to normal can be expected in approximately one fourth of cases. A long-term testosterone (Agovirin) administration has a beneficial effect on the qualitative aspect of the treatment in that it enhances sperm motility.
