[Carpal tunnel syndrome. Examples of false-positive diagnoses].

The most frequent peripheral entrapment neuropathy is the carpal tunnel syndrome. Clinical signs may be misleading. Therefore electrodiagnosis is of essential importance: EMG and ENG make is possible to confirm the diagnosis with high reliability. 4 cases with false positive diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome are discussed.

Typing of uric acid level in cerebrospinal fluid in neurological and psychiatric diseases.

The increasing number of latent and manifest hyperuricemia is important concerning differential diagnosis in neurological and psychiatric diseases. The pathological importance of hyperuricemia in these diseases is particularly unknown. The possibility of a physiological regulative function of uric acid in central nervous system may be discussed. Therefore uric acid typing in cerebrospinal fluid were made of 173 patients with neurological and psychiatric diseases. On an average the uric acid level in cerebrospinal fluid is 1:10 of the blood uric acid level. In advanced age a lower level could be found. High level for example were found after L-Dopa treatment and epileptical seizures. These results and possible pathophysiological correlation to the correspondant diseases are discussed.

[Duties and problems of a neurological intensive care unit (author's transl)].

The duties and problems of a neurological intensive care unit are described and illustrated by our experience with a newly built intensive care unit. Indications, technical equipment, diagnostic, therapeutic, scientific, personnel and psychological aspects are pointed out and a first survey of the patients treated. An approximately equal group of seasonal acute inflammatory diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems compares with a similar one with cerebral vascular processes. The possibility of longterm electrophysiological studies using computers and trend analysis and the particular significance of CSF pressure measurements and pharmacokinetics of the CSF as scientific aspects are emphasized.
