Psychosomatics and depression.

The enormous socio-cultural arrangements of the last centenary led to transformations in the course of diseases. Child mortality and infectious diseases could be largely eliminated. On the other hand, there appeared new diseases because of prolongation of life, increase of population, stress and conflicts. They, therefore, are called 'specific human diseases'--as depressions, neurosis, psychosomatic disturbances and drug abuse. In the last years depression more and more appeared as somatically masked depression.

Depressive Disorder↗

[The psychosomatics of pain, particularly in the cervicobrachial region (author's transl)].

A description is first given of the relevance of emotional factors to present-day pathological processes. Pain may be indicative of various causes: consecutive symptom of an organic process, expression of a functional disorder, emotionally conditioned symptom. The vicious circle of pain and emotion (anxiety, aggression, depression) is demonstrated as exemplified by nonarticular rheumatism. Tension revolt and suppressed aggression play a fundamental role in the cervicobrachial syndrome.

[Psychsomatic aspects of rheumatic, especially soft tissue rheumatic diseases].

Rheumatic diseases may be connected to varying degrees with psychic factors. On the one hand, rheumatic diseases may produce psychic reactions, while on the other hand rheumatic symptoms--especially in extra-articular rheumatism--may be induced by psychosomatic hysteric pararheumatic diseases and depressive mechanisms. Special reference is made to psychosomatically induced extra-articular rheumatic diseases in which not only the complex genesis but also the clinical symptomatology are discussed. During therapy more attention should be directed to psychic factors than in the past, as only an intensive psycho and/or psychopharmacotherapy can influence the disease.

[Schizophreniform conditions in adolescent drug users differentiation possibilities using objective personality inventories].

The authors report on schizophreniform states in juvenile drug consumers. The following psychodiagnostic instruments have been used in this investigation: a list of complaints, a self-estimation scale, a psychosis-depression-neurosis inventory (v. Zerssen), the Freiburg personality inventory (FPI, Fahrenberg, Selg and Hampel). According to clinical-psychopathological data in the course of psychosis, three groups of patients (N = 21) have been formed and defined as schizophrenia-, borderline-, intoxication-psychosis-groups. The report describes the procedure of two discriminant analyses by which the said three groups have been selected. In addition to methods of a cross section approach, the necessity of longitudinal observations is discussed by means of an own clinical example, considering also observations described in the literature.
