The introduction of the contrastographic medium (PG) eventually combined with CT scan (PCT) has been used in the study of non-infectious abdominal complications of patients on CAPD. In 27 patients on CAPD from 0 to 98 months we infused, through the peritoneal catheter, 100-200 ml of iopamidol and 500-2000 ml of peritoneal dialysis solution, effecting radiograms in different projections (27 cases), with contiguous axial scannings of 10 mm (8 cases). The information obtained was useful with regard to the therapeutic choices; it clarified the extent, the width, and the anatomical relations of hernias (7/7); the leakage site at the introduction point of the catheter (2/5), and site of surgical treatment (2/5); an inguinal hernia (1/4) and the previousness of the peritoneovaginal duct (3/4) in cases of the genital oedema; a displaced non-opaque catheter (1/4); obstruction of the terminal hole (2/4); wrapping of the omentum in a catheter malfunction (1/4); the presence of scar tissue and pathological recesses in the reduction of ultrafiltration (2/3); and the extension of secondary scar tissue after surgery and before CAPD was started. There were no infective complications or allergic reactions during the research. In conclusion, after reparative surgical intervention, PG and PCT are simple, convenient investigations, with significant diagnostic usefulness, before the introduction of the catheter and/or in cases of complications during CAPD.
Our study was undertaken to verify the relation among sex hormone profile, hemorheologic pattern, blood lipids and plasma proteins throughout the menstrual cycle. In effect, the estrogenic activity has been related to blood hypercoagulability, thromboembolic disorders and to cardiovascular complications in normal women and in several diseases. The protocol study concerns 15 healthy young women (mean age 25 years), with normal body weight, investigated on day 7 (follicular phase), day 14 (ovulatory phase), and days 21, 25, 27 (mid-and late luteal phase) of menstrual cycle. We evaluated: blood, plasma and serum viscosity (at shear-rate of 450; 90; 4.5; 2.25 s-1), erythrocyte deformability, haematocrit, plasma fibrinogen and fibronectin, apolipoprotein A-A1-B, triglycerides, total-HDL and LDL-cholesterol, FSH, LH, 17-beta-estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA, DHEA-sulfate and the estradiol/progesterone ratio (E2/P ratio). Higher blood, serum and plasma viscosity (p less than 0.01), and lower erythrocyte deformability (p less than 0.01) were demonstrated during follicular and ovulatory phase, than in mid- and late luteal phases of menstrual cycle. Plasma fibrinogen (p less than 0.01) and fibronectin (p less than 0.001) were also significantly increased in ovulatory and follicular phases; whereas haematocrit, blood lipids and apolipoproteins remained unchanged throughout the menstrual cycle. Positive correlations among E2/P ratio, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen and fibronectin, and negative correlations between E2/P ratio and erythrocyte deformability, were found on day 21 (p less than 0.05) and day 25 (p less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The authors have made an inquiry about school-children of two villages of Northern Appennines: Bargagli and Ottone, formerly seats of endemic goiter. The disappearance of endemic goiter in the younger generations of these villages, is in accordance with previous observations by one of the writers suggesting that sheep represent an important ecologic factor in endemic areas.
In Switzerland private practitioners carry out the school dental service for 2/3 of the about 850,000 5-16 years old pre-school and schoolchildren by contract with their community. In some bigger towns nearly 200 dentists are full-time employed at school dental clinics for the care of the remaining third of the children. In consequence of the success of preventive measures integrated into the school dental service the number of painful and stressful treatments has decreased. Therefore, the number of anxious children can decrease, too. As an example, in 1960, conservative treatment was 80% of the total work done by the school dental clinic of Basel, in 1986, may be assumed to have only 21%. A diversity of facts indicates that modern school dental service and improved oral health influences positively the later adult's dental behavior as well as his expectancies from the dentist with regard to preventive care.
