The traditional IgM-ELISA has a better sensibility and specificity than IgM-IFA when these two tests are performed on whole sera, but in many cases (sera titer values of greater than 200 I.U./ml) the presence of IgM antitoxoplasma antibodies can be detected only after purification of IgM fractions. The separations of IgM fractions avoids either false positive results due to the rheumatoid factors or antinuclear antibodies, and false negative results due to the competition between IgG and IgM antibodies. The present investigation has shown that antibody titers obtained by IgM-IFA and traditional IgM-ELISA correlate well with DS-IgM-ELISA and IgM-ISAGA performed on whole serum. The false negative results that frequently occur with IgM-IFA and traditional IgM-ELISA performed on whole sera having sera titer values of greater than 200 I.U./ml in IgG IFA are avoided when the same sera were tested by DS-IgM-ELISA and IgM-ISAGA. All the sera which gave positive results by DS-IgM-ELISA were also positive when tested with IgM-ISAGA. Our researches demonstrate the high specificity and sensitivity of IgM-ISAGA and DS-IgM-ELISA performed on whole serum.

We have observed peri-implant tissue specimens of endosseus dental implants subjected or not to occlusal load. All the specimens showed a large network of collagen microfibrils and proteoglycans filaments, strictly adherent to the endoprothesis. In some cases a layer of connective tissue surrounds the proteoglycan network only in some peri-implant areas. Cellular and extracellular components of this connective tissue were orientated parallel to the metal surface and all this appears to be correlated to a definite biological function.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Several anticancer drugs increase cell sensitivity to irradiation. Gemcitabine (2', 2' difluorodeoxycytidine) decreases the cellular dNTP pools and thus significantly increases the sensitivity to the DNA damaging effects of low-dose radiation. In this study we have investigated whether gemcitabine may play a role as radiosensitizer also in lung adenocarcinoma treatment. METHODS & STUDY DESIGN: We studied this nucleoside analogue in normal and transformed human cell lines (fetal lung and lung adenocarcinoma). After drug treatment, cell lines were irradiated with different doses. Cell damage following drug treatment and/or irradiation was assessed by measuring intracellular ATP level and by the colony forming assay. RESULTS: The two cell lines significantly differed in their sensitivity to the toxic effects of the drug; the normal cell line was much more resistant than its transformed counterpart. This difference was observed in both assays, although it was more evident in the colony forming assay. A low radiation dose (50-100 cGy) did not cause any significant damage to transformed cells; normal cells were more resistant and doses up to 500 cGy caused little damage. However, when transformed cells were pretreated for three hours with gemcitabine, even a nontoxic concentration of the drug (1-10 nM) caused a marked sensitization of the cells to irradiation (50-100 cGy). The radiosensitizing effect of gemcitabine could be observed also in normal cells, although these cells were more resistant to the damaging effects of both anticancer treatments. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that gemcitabine, a chemotherapeutic agent already used in the clinic, could be proposed as a radiosensitizer for radiation therapy of lung adenocarcinoma, having a clearly potentiating effect on lowdose radiation.
One hundred and one women suffering from "sine causa" recurrent abortion were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis (C.T.) infection by using direct examination, cultural and serological procedures. In this series, C.T. infection did not appear to be related to increased risk of recurrent abortion. The culture-positive and serology-positive rates (14.85% and 34.65%, respectively) did not differ from other unselected populations. Neither time from last abortion nor type of abortion were significantly related to C.T. infection. Nonetheless, the women who underwent examination within one year from last abortion and had a culture-positive partner as well, were more likely to present with a C.T.-positive culture.

The authors considered the epidemiological and microbiological aspects of the infectious diarrhea caused by bacteria, protozoan and viruses observed at the Infantile Hospital, Alessandria, and at the Malpighi Diagnostic Center, Chivasso, Turin, over a period of 14 months. Furthermore, a greater interest has been given to the role of Clostridium difficile diarrhea, since hospitalized patients are often predisposed to the development of this disease due to the antimicrobial prophylaxis or therapy.
