The radiographic appearance of nodular fat necrosis is described in ten cats and one dog. The most common radiographic sign was the presence of a focal mineralized circular to oval soft tissue mass in the abdominal fat as present in 9 cats. These masses had a distinct eggshell-like rim encapsulating the lesion. In one cat and one dog multiple masses were present, without radiographic signs of mineralization. Abdominal ultrasound was performed in three cats and one dog, findings included the presence of hyperechoic masses with associated acoustic shadowing, some with a hypoechoic centre. Almost all animals were old and obese. In three cats and one dog, changes were confirmed with biopsy or post mortem examination. Lesions having the appearance of those in this paper are most likely incidental findings and should not be confused with abdominal masses of neoplastic origin. Ultrasound can be helpful in identifying such lesions.

OBJECTIVE: CD27 is a member of tumour necrosis factor receptor family. Its expression is predominantly confined to mature lymphocytes and is strongly enhanced after cell activation. Shedding of the CD27 from the surface of activated cells is related to their effector phase. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the levels of soluble CD27 in sera and synovial fluids, together with its expression on circulating and synovial fluid (SF) memory T cells, in children with JIA. METHODS: Sera from 40 patients with active JIA were studied for soluble CD27. Paired SF samples were available in 20 patients. Sera from 12 age-matched patients affected with various acute infectious diseases and 12 age-matched healthy subjects were used as controls. In 8 JIA patients freshly isolated circulating and SF lymphocytes were stained for CD27 in CD4+CD45 RO+ T cell subpopulation and analyzed by cytometry. RESULTS: Soluble CD27 serum levels were significantly higher in patients with polyarticular JIA and acute systemic infectious diseases than in patients with active oligoarticular or healthy controls. Both polyarticular and oligoarticular JIA patients showed increased levels of soluble CD27 in SF when compared with paired serum samples (p = 0.01). In all the patients tested a significant enrichment of CD27- T cells was seen in the SF (median 39.5%, range 18-56%) when compared to paired CD4+CD45RO+ peripheral lymphocytes (median 19.5%, range 5-43%; p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: A clear enrichment of CD4+ memory SF T cells with a CD27-phenotype is observed when compared to correspondent circulating T lymphocytes. This issue is conceivably related to re-activation and recruitment of memory T cells to the site of inflammation, and to the subsequent expansion of a subpopulation of "effector" memory T cells.
Fiberoptic phototherapy is a new technique for treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia; in comparison with conventional phototherapy this new technique shouldn't increase body temperature during treatment. We have recorded body temperature of 13 term newborns with hyperbilirubinemia during 18 periods of treatment and compared the records with physiologic body temperature in the same babies. No increase over normal value during treatment nor significative difference during and after treatment has been observed.
Laparoscopy permits direct inspection of the peritoneal cavity. Its role is very important in oncology both in the adult and in the pediatric patient. From 1973 to 1985, 147 laparoscopies were performed on 137 patients, aged 2-16; indications were: definition of the nature of neoplastic disease in 8 cases, staging of known neoplasia in 132, restaging in 7. On Hodgkin's disease, splenic involvement in 8/113 cases was revealed by laparoscopy with biopsy. Histological examination was positive in 4 out of 22 cases of ovarian tumors. Morbidity was 1.2%. Although a laparotomy performed after laparoscopy has shown some false negatives, in most cases the clinical and instrumental follow-up has proved reliability of laparoscopic examination.
