[The histopathologic picture of experimental poisoning with ethylmethacrylates].

Toxic effect of hydroxyethylmethacrylate, acetoxyethylmethacrylate and diethylenglycomethacrylate were studied in rats surviving as long as 1 to 20 days after intramuscular administration. Conspicuous lesion were found only in calf muscles at the site of application. Muscle fibre necroses with inflammatory reaction occurred repeatedly in animals surviving 1-2 days. Newly formed connective tissue replacing impaired muscle fibres was found in rats surviving 5 days. Intoxication related other lesion in rat organs were not identified.

[The incidence of the disappearance of dehydrogenase activity in the myocardium in craniocerebral injuries].

In investigations of complications of craniocerebral injuries in casualties with a different period of survival, subjected to necropsy in the Institute for Forensic Medicine Medical Faculty, Charles University Prague the authors recorded the incidence of early ischemic and hypoxic lesions of the heart muscle. The dehydrogenase activity in the heart muscle was assessed by macroreaction with tetrazolium blue on Sikl slices. The myocardium was subjected to a detailed histological examination. The degree of atherosclerosis was assessed according to WHO guidelines. Thus 40 victims with a varying survival period were examined. In 16 of them usually major defects of dehydrogenase activity were found, in particular in the left ventricle and interventricular septum. Microscopic changes of muscle cells were relatively rare. This finding was very frequent also in the junior population without advanced coronary atherosclerosis. The above findings are important for the detailed assessment of pathomorphological changes which develop in conjunction with the injury and contribute towards the accurate assessment of the immediate cause of death.

[Determining the age of cerebral contusions].

In a group of 40 cerebral contusions with a different period of survival by histological and histochemical methods changes in the contusion foci and their surroundings were assessed. The authors compared their own findings with those of other authors. Their finding of leucostasis and incipient leucodiapedesis was found in cerebral contusions with 7 hours survival. A more marked incidence of leucocytes near the contusion was in cases with a survival of 30 hours. A readily apparent gliomensenchymal reaction near the contusion focus was found in patients who survived the injury for eight days. In the glial elements acid phosphatase and no-specific esterase activity was detected. In contusion of the frontal lobe with a 13-day survival considerable cellulization and increase in the amount of capillaries was found near the contusion focus. In survival of contusion of the frontal lobe for 28 days the glial elements with an acid phosphatase and non-specific esterase activity form a margin round the contusion focus. Even in contusion of the frontal lobe with 5-month survival numerous granular cells were found in the neighbouring area. The results obtained by the authors are not always consistent with those of others. The data of other authors frequently vary too. Therefore it is important to be careful about estimates of the age of cerebral contusions and in particular in cerebral contusions with longer survival the estimate of the age of the injury is only approximate.

[The incidence of necrosis of the adenohypophysis in violent and non-violent deaths].

Necrosis of adenohypophysis can be quite often detected by systematic histology in some violent and non-violent deaths at the departments of forensic medicine. Necrosis of adenohypophysis occurs with craniocerebral injuries either as a result of contusion, especially with sella fractures, or by a vascular impairment of adenohypophysis due to compression of pituitary stalk. The compression will be caused by increased intracranial pressure, the most often due to brain edema or leptomeningeal haemorrhage. Five cases of this sort are presented. Other cases of adenohypophyseal necrosis were found among decreased from developed shock, heart syncope lasting several minutes, 8-day survival after CO and Theadryl intoxication, bilateral internal carotid thrombosis and permanent controlled ventilation. There was not any clinical diagnosis of adenohypophyseal necrosis in spite of its extend or longer survival.

[Investigation of magnesium and calcium in ischemic changes in the human myocardium].

The results are presented of tests for magnesium and calcium and their ratio in the human myocardium affected by ischemia in correlation with macroreaction to dehydrogenases. The cases were examined in the shortest possible time after death, observing strict criteria. Even some of the relatively early postmortem changes were found to block the practical diagnostic uses of the changes of magnestium and calcium metabolism in postmortem material.

[Studies of potassium and sodium in ischemic changes of the human myocardium].

The results are presented of investigations concerning the potassium-sodium ratio in the human myocardium under ischaemia in correlation with macroreaction to dehydrogenases. The values found, though approaching those of the familiar experimental results, can hardly be regarded as reliable in diagnosing early ischaemic changes in autopsy material since they are affected by post-mortem changes.
