Cavity-enhanced optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification.

A novel method for the generation of high-energy ultrashort optical pulses is described and studied theoretically and numerically. Through the combination of parametric amplification and enhancement cavities, this method opens a route to generate few-cycle pulses at unprecedented average power levels through the use of a low-energy, high average-power pump source and energy storage in the enhancement cavity. Dispersion in the enhancement cavity ceases to be a concern with the use of long pump pulses. Limitations set by the Kerr nonlinearity of the amplifier crystal are analyzed, and ways to overcome them using self-defocusing nonlinearities are discussed.

Femtosecond fiber lasers with pulse energies above 10 nJ.

A series of experiments aimed at determining the maximum pulse energy that can be produced by a femtosecond fiber laser is reported. Exploiting modes of pulse propagation that avoid wave breaking in a Yb fiber laser allows pulse energies up to 14 nJ to be achieved. The pulses can be dechirped to sub-100-fs duration to produce peak powers that reach 100 kW. The limitations to the maximum pulse energy are discussed.

220-fs erbium-ytterbium:glass laser mode locked by a broadband low-loss silicon/germanium saturable absorber.

We demonstrate femtosecond performance of an ultrabroadband high-index-contrast saturable Bragg reflector consisting of a silicon/silicon dioxide/germanium structure that is fully compatible with CMOS processing. This device offers a reflectivity bandwidth of over 700 nm and subpicosecond recovery time of the saturable loss. It is used to achieve mode locking of an Er-Yb:glass laser centered at 1540 nm, generating 220-fs pulses, with what is to our knowledge the broadest output spectrum to date.

Self-similar evolution of parabolic pulses in a laser.

Self-similar propagation of ultrashort, parabolic pulses in a laser resonator is observed theoretically and experimentally. This constitutes a new type of pulse shaping in mode-locked lasers: in contrast to the well-known static (solitonlike) and breathing (dispersion-managed soliton) pulse evolutions, asymptotic solutions to the nonlinear wave equation that governs pulse propagation in most of the laser cavity are observed. Stable self-similar pulses exist with energies much greater than can be tolerated in solitonlike pulse shaping, and this has implications for practical lasers.

Frequency shifting with local nonlinearity management in nonuniformly poled quadratic nonlinear materials.

We show theoretically that the frequency shifts that result from phase-mismatched cascaded processes under conditions of strong group-velocity mismatch can be significantly enhanced by local control of the nonlinearity with propagation. This control is possible with continuous variation of the poling period of quasi-phase-matched structures and can allow one to avoid saturation of the frequency shift. We theoretically demonstrate its applicability to high-quality, efficient frequency shifting of infrared pulses.

Practical all-fiber source of high-power, 120-fs pulses at 1 micrometre.

Amplification of femtosecond pulses at 1.03 micrometre in a standard Yb-doped single-mode fiber is reported. A pulse energy of 8 nJ and an average power of 400 mW are obtained, limited by available pump power. To our knowledge these are the highest pulse energy and average power obtained from an integrated, single-mode fiber amplifier. After dechirping, 120-fs, 6-nJ pulses are obtained. A practical fiber-based source with performance comparable with that of a bulk solid-state laser is thus demonstrated, and scaling to substantially higher powers will be possible.

Generation of 50-fs, 5-nJ pulses at 1.03 micrometre from a wave-breaking-free fiber laser.

We report the generation of 6-nJ chirped pulses from a mode-locked Yb fiber laser at 1.03 micrometre. A linear anomalous-dispersion segment suppresses wave-breaking effects of solitonlike pulse shaping at high energies. The dechirped pulse duration is 50 fs, and the energy is 5 nJ. This laser produces twice the pulse energy and average power, and approximately five times the peak power, of the previous best mode-locked fiber laser. It is to our knowledge the first fiber laser that directly offers performance similar to that of solid-state lasers such as Ti:sapphire.

Generation of 2-nJ pulses from a femtosecond ytterbium fiber laser.

We report a mode-locked ytterbium fiber laser that generates femtosecond pulses with energies as large as 2.2 nJ. This represents a 20-fold improvement in pulse energy compared with that of previously reported femtosecond Yb fiber lasers. The laser produces pulses as short as 52 fs, which are to our knowledge the shortest pulses to date from a Yb fiber laser. The laser is diode pumped by a wavelength-division multiplexing coupler, which leads to excellent stability.
