[Dermatologic clinic of the Bad Cannstatt Hospital. Origin and development of clinical dermatology in Stuttgart].

In 1837, Germany's first in-patient dermatological department named "Heilanstalt für Flechtenkranke" was founded by Dr. Albert Friedrich Veiel in the city of Cannstatt (which since 1905 is part of Stuttgart). Later his son, Dr. Theodor Veiel, directed this private dermatological clinic, and became head of the district hospital of Cannstatt in 1881. Although he was active in many areas of medicine, dermatology was his main interest. He very much influenced the development of dermatology during his period as president of the German Dermatology Association until his death in 1923. In 1935, the first dermatological city hospital was established in Cannstatt/Stuttgart. But, after World War II, all the medical facilities were taken over by the US Army. Thus, medical activities including dermatology had to be spread all over Stuttgart, until in 1965 they were returned to their former place. At the end of 1998, the large abandoned US army hospital will home a totally renovated and modernized Stuttgart dermatology hospital.

[Extensive metastatic Kaposi sarcoma in chronic immune suppressed bronchial asthma].

In a severely ill 64-year-old man with multilocular Kaposi sarcoma HIV infection was excluded. The decisive factor in the pathogenesis, was long-term immunosuppression with systemic corticosteroids for bronchial asthma. The patient died from cardiorespiratory insufficiency in the course of tumour progression. Autopsy revealed a vast visceral manifestation of Kaposi sarcoma.

[Impotentia coeundi in prolactinoma].

We report on a 48-year-old patient who had increasingly suffered from impotence since 20 years. Since three years, aspermatism had been additionally noted. Androgenic dysfunction was attributed to low plasma testosterone and high prolactin levels. As the cause, we diagnosed prolactinome growing downward the pituitary sella. Our therapy comprised neurosurgery as well as combined oral administration of bromocriptin.

[Pemphigus herpetiformis].

A 17-year-old female patient suffered from bullous dermatitis of the oral mucosa, followed by skin lesions about one year after first manifestation of the disease. Clinical picture, histopathology, as well as immunofluorescent findings proved herpetiform pemphigus. Here we discuss the typical characteristics of the disease.
