Xenon-arc endophotocoagulation during vitrectomy for diabetic vitreous haemorrhage.

The value of scatter xenon-arc endophotocoagulation in stabilising eyes with respect to post-operative rubeosis iridis and vitreous haemorrhage is demonstrated in a consecutive series of 100 vitrectomies undertaken for diabetic vitreous haemorrhage. Seventy eyes ultimately achieved 6/36 or better vision. Endophotocoagulation of untreated ischaemic retina is recommended in eyes undergoing vitrectomy for diabetic vitreous haemorrhage.

Echography of optic disc related pathology in diabetic retinopathy.

Combined A- and B-scan examination of eyes with diabetic retinopathy and opaque media provides information about the presence and density of vitreous hemorrhages, can detect membranes inserting into the optic disc or the retina and differentiate them from retinal detachment. Absolute and relative indications for echographic examination are listed and some echograms concerning vitreous hemorrhage, proliferating membranes and traction retinal detachment are presented. The value of both A-scan standardized echography and contact B-scan technique for previtrectomy evaluation is stressed.

Role of vestibular nuclei in 'optic' nystagmus.

Horizontal eye nystagmus beating towards the stimulated side ('optic' nystagmus) was evoked in 25 guinea pigs by stimulating an optic nerve. The complete ablation of the vestibular nuclear complex abolished this nystagmus. In a second group of 15 animals, the behavior of 63 vestibular neurons identified electrophysiologically was analyzed during eye nystagmus; most of these neurons responded with a tonic increase in discharge rate to stimulation of the optic nerves. Units sensitive to the direction of optic and labyrinthine nystagmus were also identified.
