Simultaneity of responses in a hierarchical visual network.

The pattern of anatomical connections between areas of the primate visual system is organized hierarchically. However, onset latencies in parietal and occipital stations are often simultaneous, and this seems to contradict hierarchical organization in its simplest interpretation, as serial organization. To understand the reasons for this contradiction, we simulated the cortical network for which there is onset data, including the network's hierarchical structure. The network's dynamics reproduced the simultaneous onset latencies reported in several dorsal areas. These results show that a strictly hierarchical visual system is compatible with much more complex dynamics than serial processing, and that hodological and biophysical properties, are more closely related to onset dynamics than is hierarchical organisation.

[Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus infection and varicella].

The case of a 3-year-old boy affected with varicella associated to acute cellulitis by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci is reported. The causes of hospitalization were: high fever, decline of condition, onset of scarlet exanthema and a severe swelling in the inguinoscrotal area, during varicella. The diagnosis of streptococcal infection was confirmed by positive pharyngeal tampon, scarlet exanthema and following rise of ASLO. Since the association of these two infections is reported in literature more and more frequently, the possible causes and precautionary measures are analysed.

Limb anomalies following chorionic villus sampling: a registry based case-control study.

Using data from the Italian Multicentric Birth Defect Registry a case-control study was performed to verify if chorionic villus sampling (CVS) was associated with transverse limb defects (TLD), with or without features of oro-mandibular-limb hypogenesis complex (OMLHC), in the exposed offspring. The results show that the risk of TLD and OMLHC is increased following CVS, and is particularly high for CVS performed early in pregnancy, i.e., under 70 days of gestational age. These results, together with a review of other epidemiologic studies, biological data and clinical reports, strongly suggest a causative role of CVS as a risk factor for TLD and indicate that at this stage CVS before 70 days of gestational age should be discouraged as an option for prenatal diagnosis and that all patients wishing to undergo CVS should be informed about the possible risk of the procedure.

[Obstructive-restrictive pulmonary syndrome as long-term side effect of bone marrow transplantation in thalassemia major. Prognostic and therapeutic problems].

The Authors describe a case of severe obstructive-restrictive pulmonary disease following bone marrow transplantation in a Cooley disease affected child. It is an uncommon complication, strictly related to chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (c-GVHD) and for the prevention of which it is may be necessary a more aggressive c-GVHD immunosuppressive therapy. Bone marrow transplantation represents today the only actual resolutive therapy for thalassemia major; so the number of transplantations and related undesirable effects are thought to be increasing in the future. Therefore, a permanent Centre for Control of the complications can be useful for the improvement of survival and quality of life in these patients.

[Plasma prolactin in childhood paroxysmal disorders].

The Authors discuss the role of plasma prolactin concentration as a marker to discriminate epileptic and non epileptic seizures. In 40 children was determined prolactin during the first seizure (30 feverish and 10 non feverish seizures). The analysis of the results shows that during non feverish seizures prolactin concentration in higher, but we don't know if the same seizures are the beginning of epilepsy. So plasma prolactin concentration is a parameter of moderate interest in diagnosis and prognosis in childhood paroxismal disorders.
