Arsenic speciation in human urine reference materials using high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric detection.

Six arsenic compounds including arsenocholine, arsenobetaine, dimethylarsinic acid, methylarsonic acid, arsenous acid and arsenic acid were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a Hamilton PRP-X100 anion-exchange column using isocratic elution and detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This analytical procedure was applied to the speciation of arsenic compounds in human urine. The influence of urine matrix on the separation of arsenic compounds was evaluated and the determination of arsenic compounds was not hampered by the ArCl interference which has often been encountered in ICP-MS. Three human urine reference materials, SRM 2670 normal level, SRM 2670 elevated level and Lyphocheck urine metal control 1, were analyzed with respect to arsenic compounds by HPLC-ICP-MS. The results were found to be in good agreement with the certified total arsenic concentration in the reference materials. Six arsenic compounds were detected. Arsenobetaine was found to be present in all of the investigated human urine reference materials.

Cancer mortality from 1978 to 1987 in smaller regions of Styria, Austria, with different environmental conditions.

In 1984 we have shown in a study, that regions with high air pollution have a higher respiratory cancer rate than regions without substantial air pollution. In this study 45 small regions of Styria, which can be considered homogenous from an environmental viewpoint, have been studied with respect to age standardized respiratory cancer mortality. These small regions have been classified into regions without substantial air pollution, with substantial air and substantial water pollution. Between 1978 and 1987 we have found that small regions with substantial air or water pollution show an increased age standardized respiratory cancer mortality than small regions with "good" environmental conditions. In some regions the rate was twice as high compared to regions without substantial environmental problems. The main difference was found for the age group between 60 and 75 years. Generally between 1978 and 1987 no trend has been observed, only within age groups a shift can be seen.

Hygienic investigation of coastal waters of the upper Adriatic Sea.

In the course of the bathing season of 1989, investigations of bathing waters were carried out in two-week intervals. From the point of view of public health, the chemical-physical and microbiological results do not suggest objections against bathing at the beach areas investigated (Grado, Lignano). However, these favorable results do not imply intact ecological conditions. National and international standards are designed for humans and allow only very limited conclusions about the living conditions of the marine ecosystem. This also means that ecological investigations are not sufficient to permit conclusions about hygienic conditions. In spite of this seeming contradiction, hygienic and ecological concerns are clearly identical. Hygienic measures must not be limited to local "cosmetic" corrections but must target foremost unfavorable basic conditions.

[Water studies of inhabitants of refuse disposal sites in Cairo. 1].

In two waste disposal sites in Cairo, drinking water samples from springs, drinking vessels and kitchens were investigated. Total germ count lay seldom below one thousand and ten million pro ml. Apart from various faecal germs, Aeromonas hydrophila was also found. The high occurrence of diarrhoeal diseases among the inhabitants of the waste disposal sites can be traced with certainty to the extremely bad drinking water quality.

[The pathogen spectrum of the conjunctiva of inhabitants of refuse disposal sites in Cairo. I].

In Cairo's waste disposal sites conjunctivitis is frequently found resulting from the burning process of plastic, paper, etc.. Recurrent secondary contamination of the conjunctiva by pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms often takes place; however, in certain germ species, the differentiation between pathogenic or non-pathogenic organisms within a damaged mucous membrane cannot be made. Furthermore, in this study, we have attempted to investigate germ reproduction during the application of PVP-eyedrops. However, our results cannot be conclusive because of the high environmental contamination, very low personal hygiene resulting from contaminated water and the constant exposure of samples to environmental contamination. Studies will be continued.

Different species of corynebacteria in human investigations in Cairo.

In investigations undertaken in Cairo of ocular smears the following Corynebacteria were isolated: Corynebacterium A4, Corynebacterium A5, Corynebacterium bovis, Corynebacterium aquaticum, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Corynebacterium equi, Corynebacterium F2, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Corynebacterium minutissimi, Corynebacterium renale, Corynebacterium xerosis, Corynebacterium Group I, Corynebacterium spec. (at present not classified). In this study the hitherto isolated species and possible human pathogenesis are discussed. Studies will be continued.
