[Immuno-oncologic monitoring of patients with bronchial carcinoma. II. Plasma fibronectin determination].

Recent attempts implicating glycoproteins have been focused on the study of fibronectin. This glycoprotein was observed especially in cellular adhesivity processes. Some works were direct to detect the fibronectin concentration in plasma and in other biological fluids to relate increased or decreased levels in pathological features. In this paper we describe a study on plasma fibronectin in lung cancer patients during the course of the disease.

Lack of inhibition of mitogen-induced lymphoproliferation by interferon gamma.

Interferon (IFN) gamma has been shown to have enhancing effects on immunocompetent cells, as for example induction of the expression of I-A antigens. In this report the effect of purified mouse IFN-gamma on mitogen-induced proliferation was studied. In contrast to the situation observed with IFN-alpha or IFN-beta, treatment by IFN-gamma had no suppressive effect on mitogenesis. Enhancing effects on DNA synthesis induced by phytohemagglutinin were observed at low concentrations of IFN-gamma in the early stage of lymphocyte activation. The effects on T cell proliferation, however, were not consistent under all experimental conditions.

[Medical complications in lung resections].

The complications of pulmonary resections are discussed with reference to a group of 82 patients. Arrhythmias, infections of pleural space and post-operative atelectasis occur with major frequency. Pleuropulmonary infections are most serious events because they are associated with significant mortality.

[Castleman's tumor. Considerations on 3 operated cases].

Three recently observed cases of Castleman's tumour are described. A brief summary of the clinical histories, themselves of little significance, the histological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the disease are examined. The series is shown to be fully in line with those reported in the literature, and support is given to the view that the tumour is of inflammatory origin.

Effect of lung resection on pulmonary function. A comparative study in different surgical procedures.

The effect of lung surgery on respiratory function has been investigated in 40 patients considering separately the three main procedures (pneumonectomy, lobectomy and thoracotomy alone) to ascertain if the resected lung and the volume removal can influence this function in the immediate postoperative period. The patients were submitted to spirometry and arterial gas analysis preoperatively and during 9 days postoperation; the tests controlled were VC, FEV1, TV and RR. No significant difference has been noticed among various surgical procedures.
