[Survey of alcohol drinking and results of studies of alcoholism biological markers within the scope of a neurologic occupational medicine study of industrial workers].

As part of a combined neurological and occupational-medical study about potentially neurotoxic agents consumption of alcohol of the probationers as possible influential factor on the nervous system was evaluated. Therefore an injury of industrial workers of different nationalities was performed about the individual alcohol consumption combined with an investigation about so-called alcoholism-markers [gamma-Glutamyltranferase (gGT), mean corpuscular erythrocytes volume (MCV) and Carbohydrate-deficient Transferrin (CDT)]. It was the aim of the study, to give an overview of the amount of alcohol consumption in male industrial workers - and to examine, to what extent connections exist between alcoholism markers and the amount of individual alcohol consumption. We found a high percentage of probationers with alcohol abstinence (53%). The test persons with anamnestic alcohol consumption indicated a mean alcohol consumption of 33,7 g per day (6 to 240 g/d). A significant correlation between changes of laboratory markers and amount of alcohol consumption could only be found for CDT. In addition there was a correlation of CDT with gGT and MCV and of gGT with MCV, but with very small correlation coefficients. After multiple logistic regression and establishing of a prediction model of the consumption of alcohol under knowledge of laboratory results an assignment of the probationers to the respective group (abstinents and/or consumers of alcohol) was not successful with sufficient safety. According to our data in a normal collective a determination of laboratory parameters, which are discussed as alcoholism markers, does not contribute to better delimitation of abstinent living and alcohol drinking persons and to a better knowledge of the amount of alcohol consumption.

[Validation of a computer-assisted procedure for producing blood and blood component transfusions].

BACKGROUND: The validation of computer-aided methods in the production of stored blood and blood components represents for a pharmaceutical institution a basic condition for the carrying out of the decrees of pharmaceutical companies. When validating computer-aided methods in medicine or pharmacy, the fields of informatics and technology have to be linked to applications in medicine and pharmacy. METHOD: In many cases the methods for the documented proof that a system achieves the expected capacity are too complex, so that a validation is only practicable in module groups. This is shown with an example of the blood typing on microtiter plates. RESULTS: After the selection of the hard- and software according to the safety criteria of information technology taking into consideration functional classes and degrees of quality, a complete documentation of the validation of blood typing on the microtiter plate was carried out.

[Effects of early biologic and psychosocial risk factors on mental performance and disease-promoting behavior of adult medical patients].

UNLABELLED: Early biological and social risks were related to measures of cognitive functioning and illness behaviour in adult patients. RESULTS: 1. Self-reported data on risks in early developmental stages are consistent with longitudinal data and theoretical assumptions. 2. Patients with biological risks show deficits in fluid abilities and signs of mild cerebral insufficiency. 3. Socially handicapped patients tend to coronary-prone behaviour and report more emotional strain while coping with complex problems.

[Cognitive structure and risk of myocardial infarct].

In a psychophysiological experiment with 18 patients with cardiovascular disorders but without infarction we proved the influence of habituallized cognitive structures on reactivity under mental load. We used the concepts of different causal attribution (Explanatory style: Peterson and Seligman) and psychic regulation of activity and action (Activity style: Günther). It can be shown that patients with pessimistic explanatory style as well as with diffuse psychic activity control show coronary-prone reaction patterns under load (indicators: cortisol and triglycerids in serum).

[Value of systemic streptokinase therapy in thromboembolism diseases].

Among 27,756 cases with stationary treatment 1,532 patients were found in whom a systemic fibrinolysis therapy was taken into consideration. Under strict attention to indications and contraindications 173 patients were treated with streptokinase. The rate of treatment failures in peripheral arterial obstructions was 46%, in venous thromboses 29%. The lethality of pulmonary embolisms could be decreased significantly, in acute myocardial infarction however, it could not be reduced. In 10% of the cases we observed severe therapeutic complications. The systemic streptokinase therapy is therefore a certainly effective, but also high-risk method of treatment, which must be performed by an experienced physician.

[The vascular cerebellopontile angle syndrome].

A cerebellopontine angle tumor cannot be reliably diagnosed from a classical clinicotopographic cerebellopontine angle syndrome. There is also a vascular cerebellopontine angle syndrome which is not too rare an occurrence. In some cases of tumorigenesis, where there is no papilledema and no characteristic increase in total liqour protein, it is not possible to make a clear decision between tumorous growth and vascular syndrome. The extension of the internal auditory meatus cannot be considered to be a symptom clearly indicating the presence of a tumor.

[The prevention of tick-borne encephalitis (author's transl)].

Tick-borne encephalitis is one of the most frequently-encountered virus diseases of the central nervous system in Europe. Hence, prophylactic measures for the prevention of tick-borne encephalitis are of particular importance, especially since it is virtually impossible to influence the course of the manifest disease by means of current therapeutic procedures. Moreover, complications (paralysis and other sequelae) are frequent. A recently-developed vaccine (killed virus) is capable of providing easy and long-lasting protection for a large part of the population. The safety and efficacy of the vaccine was proved in 30,000 persons who were vaccinated in a field trial. Wide-scale implementation may be recommended mainly for persons under regular exposure, but also for the protection of people remaining in an endemic area for a short time only. However, if immediate protection of non-immunised persons is required, i.e. persons who discover ticks on their body or who show the presumptive signs of an existing virus infection, passive immunisation with tick-borne encephalitis immune globulin is recommended.
