Temperature change: the basic variable in the early handling phenomenon?
Rats which had been handled or which had been subjected to lowered temperature without handling during the first week of life showed significant reduction of adrenal ascorbic acid when stressed, while appropriate controls did not. Exposure to lower temperature, and consequent lowering of skin or body temperature, may be the crucial factor in handling.
