Changes in serum apolipoprotein B concentration after oral glucose or intramuscular insulin.

An oral glucose load or a single i.m. insulin injection given to normal human subjects was followed within 1 h by a fall in total serum apolipoprotein B concentration. Although both procedures caused a concomitant drop in serum albumin concentration, the apolipoprotein-B/albumin ratio fell significantly, indicating that the drop in serum apolipoprotein B concentration cannot be explained by hemodilution.

Synthetic peptides related to the dermorphins. II. Synthesis and biological activities of new analogues.

A new series of analogues of the potent opiate-like peptides dermorphins (mainly tetra- and pentapeptides) were synthesized in order to better evaluate the structure-activity relationships. Relative potencies were referred to dermorphin (H-Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Gly-Tyr-Pro-Ser-NH2), the prototype of this class of frog skin peptides. Peripheral opioid activity (guinea-pig ileum and mouse vas deferens) was determined for all the dermorphin analogues. For a selected number of them also central analgesic (hot plate and tail-flick tests) and cataleptic activities were assayed in the rat by intracerebroventricular administration.

Circadian rhythm of circulating corticosterone and urinary excretion of catecholamines, serotonin and their catabolites in rats treated with imipramine.

The circadian rhythm of serum corticosterone was assessed in rats entrained to a 12:12 LD cycle and treated with tricyclic imipramine (25 mg/kg/day) via osmotic pumps for a period of 14 days; urinary excretion of catecholamines, serotonin and their catabolites was also assessed. We observed that imipramine did not modify the phase position of the corticosterone rhythm but rather lowered the animal's responsiveness as shown by the lower peak of corticosterone at 2000 and by the smaller amplitude of its circadian rhythm; moreover imipramine had no effect on urinary excretion of catecholamines, serotonin and their catabolites during LD cycle.

Neuronal responses in vestibular nuclei to dorsal raphe electrical activation.

The effects of dorsal raphe (DR) electrical stimulation on the neuronal activity of vestibular nuclei were studied in anaesthetized rats. The aim was to establish whether the central systems classically involved in nociceptive functions are able to influence vestibular secondary neurons. DR activation induced modifications of the firing in 70% of the tested neurons, the percentage being similar in the lateral (LVN), superior (SVN), and spinal (SpVN) vestibular nuclei. Three different types of responses were recorded: long-lasting modifications (generally enhancements) of the mean firing rate (43%), short-latency response patterns (14%), both (43%). Short-latency response patterns were more numerous in LVN than in SVN. Iontophoretic applications of 5-HT antagonists Methysergide and Ketanserin blocked long-lasting effects but were scarcely effective on the short-latency response patterns evoked by DR stimulation. It is concluded that DR exerts a double control on secondary vestibular neurons: a generalised excitatory influence by serotoninergic fibers and a specific action mostly targeted on LVN, by nonserotoninergic pathways.
