[Midfacial and mandibular fractures during the growth period].

This study investigated the occurrence of primary and secondary complications following conservative versus surgical intervention in the treatment of midface and lower jaw fractures. Follow-up studies were undertaken on 81 patients who had been admitted to the above clinic with such fractures during their adolescence. It was found that more complications developed after surgical intervention.

[Needle electromyography with sonographic control of needle position].

High resolution ultrasound provides excellent imaging of mimic muscles. In contrast to clinical examination, single muscles can be well defined and by real time imaging be observed during function. Since an EMG-needle electrode is also visible the puncture of small muscles or muscle-segments can be achieved with great exactness under sonographic control. The result of the electromyographic studies can, therefore, be related to individual muscles or muscle-segments.

Blepharoptosis

[Retrograde movement of upper incisors].

Labial stress of 1 to 8 n(102-815 Pond) was exerted on free-standing upper incisors, both healthy teeth and teeth damaged by progressive marginal periodontitis, until all creeping movement subsided and constant guidance was achieved. The teeth were then freed, and the resetting movements were measured without inertia and free of effect. The dampening characteristics of healthy and diseased teeth differed qualitatively in the first few milliseconds. Construction of a diagnostic device of determination of periodontal disease suitable for the general practice therefore ought to be possible.

[Protein screening in wheat and broad bean specimens in Gatersleben].

Actually and in future times plant proteins will constitute the main and primary source of proteins in animal feeding and human alimentation. Therefore, the main efforts to resolve the world nutrition problems are focused on the increase of the protein production and the improvement of the nutritional quality of plant seed proteins. In this regard plant breeding occupies one of the most important strategic positions. With the aim of selecting forms with elevated grain protein content and improved protein quality the systematic screening of collections of wild forms and cultivated cereals and leguminoses constitutes a pre-requisite of successful breeding work in relation to the above-mentioned task. In 1970 the Central Institute of Genetics and Investigation of Cultivated Plants at Gatersleben, GDR, belonging to the Academy of Sciences, started a systematic protein screening with about 10000 wheat, 6500 barley and 450 broad bean specimens, which are parts of the World Collection of Cultivated Plants at this institute. Protein determination was performed by the traditional KJELDAHL-method. Limiting amino acids, essentially lysin from cereal grains, were estimated by automatic ion exchange technique. The annual analytic capacity amounted to 6000 to 8000 samples. First results and problems of wheat- and broad bean-screening are reported in the present publication.

[Paresis of the femoral nerve following vaginal hysterectomy and its medico-legal implication (author's transl)].

Following the North American example, mal-practice suits become more common in Germany. The rare complication of a paresis of the femoral nerve following vaginal hysterectomy is reported. Among 1307 vaginal hysterectomies, including 33 radical vaginal hysterectomies between 1969 and 1974, three cases occurred. In one case, the surgeon was sued but the patient lost the mal-practice suit. In another case a diminished employability was recognized later. The causes and the prevention of damage of the femoral nerve during vaginal procedures are discussed.
