The effect of tequila in the synaptonemal complex structure of mouse spermatocytes.

The effect of tequila in the synaptonemal complex (SC) of mouse spermatocytes was determined. We tested 3 dosages (2.1, 4.2 and 8.4 g/kg) administered in a single intraperitoneal inoculation. The frequency of SC alterations was established in pachytenic nuclei 5 days after the administration using a silver impregnation technique. Three types of alterations were observed (desynapses, breaks and multiaxials) and the rate of each alteration was compared with that obtained with appropriate controls, including cyclophosphamide (CP) (150 mg/kg). The results showed a significant increase induced by tequila only in the frequency of desynapses. This damage began at the second highest dose (4.2 g/kg). The other SC alterations were in the control range. CP, however, induced a significant increase in all 3 types of SC alterations.

Clinical trial with clofazimine for treating erythema dyschromicum perstans. Evaluation of cell-mediated immunity.

Eight patients were studied to determine the possible use of clofazimine for treating erythema dyschromicum perstans (EDP). The T-helper/T-suppressor cytotoxic ratio (CD-4/CD-8) and the in vitro lymphoproliferative response on stimulation with phytohemaglutin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A) were determined in peripheral blood before and after treatment. Of the eight patients studied, seven had excellent to good responses, whereas only one had a marginal response. The immunologic evaluation before and after treatment showed a significant change in the CD-4/CD-8 ratio, a decrease of the response to PHA, and no change in the response to Con A. The results obtained show that clofazimine is useful for treating this nosologic entity because of its cosmetic effect, and also because it induces changes in cell-mediated response, which could be very important therapeutically.

Regulatory peptides in endocrine cells and autonomic nerves: electron immunocytochemistry.

Advances in immunocytochemistry, particularly at the electron microscope level, have enabled us to establish further details of the ultrastructural appearance of endocrine cells and autonomic nerves of the gastrointestinal tract. Its contribution can be summarised as follows: a)validation of previously recognised endocrine cell types. b) Recognition of sub-groups within endocrine cells and autonomic nerve cell types previously included within one single type (e.g. D1 cells and p-type autonomic nerves). c) Discrimination of molecular forms now known to be stored in morphologically distinguishable secretory granules or parts thereof (e.g. pro-glucagon and glucagon in A cells and gut and antral gastrin-producing cells). Advances in the techniques and the accurate quantification of the end products will enable us to recognise changes in gastrointestinal tract diseases in man.

[Phagocytic function of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and lymphocyte subpopulations in patients with amebiasis].

We initiated a pilot study to evaluate the functions of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and also to analyze the behavior of lymphocyte subpopulations in patients with different clinical forms of amoebiasis. We found significant differences in many aspects as NBT reduction, Candida digestion, CD4/CD8 relation, Ia expression. We suggest a wider investigation of the mechanism of cell mediated immunity in patients with amoebiasis.
