Correlations between parameters of body selenium status and peripheral thyroid parameters in the low selenium region.

The following were measured in 380 male and female inhabitants of Prague (n the age range 6-65 years):selenium in serum and urine, iodine in urine, thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroid volume, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), ankle jerk time, pulse rate and body fat. Correlations were calculated to assess the influence of Se upon the thyroid hormone parameters and their peripheral effects in Se-deficient regions both by using the linear correlation analysis and by using the multiple linear correlation analysis and the analysis of variance. Many significant linear correlations were found for whole groups of examined persons, for the individual groups (boys, men, girls and women) as well as for subgroups, according to the age and sex. We conclude, from the analytical results of Se indices (serum, hair, urine) reported previously, and on the basis of the statistical demonstration of the influence of selenium upon thyroid hormone levels and the peripheral effects in the group of Prague inhabitants in connection with the previously documented role of Se in pathways resulting in the synthesis of physiologically active thyroid hormone, that inhabitants of Prague are selenium deficient. Concurrent deficiency of selenium may modify and even worsen iodine deficiency disorders of various stages. Multiple linear correlation analysis followed by analysis of variance of subgroups indicated a coincidence of the effects of some measured parameters upon the peripheral manifestation of thyroid hormone state as well as highlighting the effect of other independent variables of thyroid hormone metabolism than those measured in the study.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Evaluation of epidemiologic studies using the EPI INFO program].

The authors describe the EPI INFO system suitable for introducing on a personal computer, compatible with the standard IBM XT/AT. The system was elaborated by a group of workers from Centres of Disease Control in Alabama in 1988. The advantage of the system is in addition to ready availability (it is distributed on a non-commercial basis), in particular because it combines the advantages of the data base and statistical programme system. It makes it possible storage of data, their easy processing by classification and tabulation, evaluation by some statistical (parametric and non-parametric) tests and simple graphical presentation of results, e.g. in histograms or figures using columns. Moreover, it is possible to make in the EPI INFO system further modifications of the stored data and to combine groups of similar or different format. The system does not only create its own external data groups but makes also possible their conversion into other systems and conversely is able to create from external groups of data its own groups of data.

[Pharmacokinetics and chronotherapy of delayed action theophylline (Euphyllin CR)].

Monitoring of theophyllinaemia in the course of 24 h during treatment with theophylline anhydrate capsules (Euphyllin CR) was used in 20 children (9-15 years) and in 20 adults (18-61 years) with bronchial asthma. The doses used in children were 5.96 mg/kg at 7 a.m. and 10.2 mg/kg at 7 p.m., while in adults the morning and evening doses were similar (4.35 and 4.89 mg/kg). After the first dose in the morning the serum theophylline concentration (STC) did not differ in children and adults (10.4 and 10.5 mg/l). In adults the half-time of absorption was twice as high as in children (0.63 and 0.3 h), as well as the time when the peak theophylline concentration was reached (2.7 and 1.39 h). In children a double dose of the drug at night ensured a STC of 11.2 mg/l and a maximum theophyllinaemia (C max = 13.5 mg/l between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. (measured by the EMIT method). In adults the values during the night were significantly lower than in day-time (STC: ANOVA test P less than 0.05, C max: T-test P less than 0.01). The percentage fluctuation in individual subjects was small (36-49) interindividual, fluctuations in children and adults were considerable (105 to 207). From the chronoprofile of the pharmacokinetics of Euphyllin CR ensues that at the age of 9-15 years the most important indicators are similar to those in adults and that both groups should be given at night a double dose, as compared with that administered in the morning.

[Longitudinal control of a selected group of young men in view of chronic bronchitis incidence (author's transl)].

Report on a prospective longitudinal study of a group fo 16 years old men of Prague, followed up to 6 years. Every two years questionnaires were checked and fluorography, ECG and breathing function tests had been done, too. The group of 341 young men, whose data were complete, had been divided into smokers and nonsmokers, in students and apprentices as well as in healthy persons and people, who suffered from chronic bronchitis. All men with chronic bronchitis had a smoker-history but breathing function tests were normal. First signs of bronchitis will not be recorded by function tests but will be found out by subjective symptoms about 3 years after the beginning of smoking.
